Friends Account Isn't Recognizing I'm Online

If it’s just that one friend, tell him/her to check their settings on Xbox. If they tried messing with the settings and it ended up not fixing anything as a result, you should try contacting Xbox Support to see what the issue might be. I’ve never heard
of anyone having an issue like that so I don’t really know how to help. But the least you can do is let an Xbox Support worker know about the situation. They might have better solutions then the one I tried giving you.

I noticed this issue pops up every once in a while. It usually happens with anyone in the preview program. I am not sure why but after I get an update in the preview program then usually my friends cannot see I am online even though everything states
I am online. This is not a problem for my other friends who are part of the preview program. They can see that I am online with no problem.

Is your profile set to appear offline?

If you bring up the guide and scroll all the way to the left, then select your profile image, at the bottom there should be the option to 'Appear Online', 'Appear Offline' or 'Do Not Disturb'.

If it is set to 'Appear Online' try selecting one of the other options then back to 'Appear Online' and power cycle the Xbox. Otherwise it may be a way your account security is set up which you can access through settings.

If you are able to see your friend online invite him to a party and you should be able to play together that way.
