I believe I see the 3 red items but can't interact with them I've been trying for like an hour what am I missing?

stand beside the items and then click the thumbstick then you should be able to select the item

 

make sure you use the right stick to look in it's direction also, can help sometimes.

 

I thought it was odd that you have to use the search function despite that fact that the red objects are in plain site. But -very slight spoiler follows- odd things fit the quest I suppose.
