Friend interaction problems GTA 5

I’m also having the same exact issue. I have the full game and my friend has GTA: Online. We’re both on xbox and both have Live. But it directs him to buy the game when I send him an invite.

As per your description you can join multiplayer with friends in other games, but with GTA online you cannot. It also happen the same using your parent's account and to your friend who bought on the same time with you.

I am still having problems with being able to join and invite friends on GTA Online. It still forces you to try to buy it even though you already own it.

I have this same issue, I am playing GTA 5 online and can join other random players but joining friends it prompts each of us, joining each other's game, to the Microsoft store to purchase the game. I own the hard copy and it's the x/s version. My NAT is open, I have uninstalled the game in its totality and reinstalled it with updates and we are still prompted to purchase the games. We have noticed that we have different versions when we open the file info of the games. We don't know how to fix this issue when our consoles do not allow an update or don't show an update available. We have the same game as far as the Microsoft store is concerned. (X/s version) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your friend is playing on an Xbox S/X Series, make sure he has purchased the Xbox One version of the game and has not purchased the optimized version for his console, as the game does not feature cross-play between Xbox One and Xbox Series, Rockstar implemented separate servers for each version of the game.

If you both have the same version, go to your network settings and check your NAT type, if it is moderate/strict, follow the recommendations in this link to fix it.
