Freesync (variable refresh rate), Resolutions unavailable at 120hz.

Hello. So I believe I have identified a compatibility issue that will only amplify over time and Ive seen this question being asked without much resolve. People are buying monitors that support freesync over hdmi that can also refresh at 144hz or higher
and this is where problems begin. Monitors usually have multiple options to set the refresh rate of the screen to 60hz, 90hz, 100hz 120, 144 etc etc. and your options will vary from monitor to monitor. This is where it gets very important...monitors have a
“Native” refresh rate which is usually the highest possible refresh rate of the monitor. In my monitors case (Viewsonic xg2402) the native refresh rate is 144hz and I will use it as the example. Some monitors only support freesync at its native refresh rate
which is why when setting the output of the console to hdmi > 120hz the option for variable refresh rate then becomes greyed out and unavailable. When switching the hdmi back to auto detect then vrr becomes available again and this is where the issue is. Im
not a monitor or xbox engineer but I would describe it as the xbox is hijacking the monitor and artificially limiting the screen to 120hz at the system level even if the monitor is still set at its native refresh rate and you have freesync turned on on the
actual monitor itself. This causes the monitor to then not support vrr because 120hz is not the native refresh rate. Hdmi 1.4 bandwidth is not the problem. Auto detect works fine but the 120hz output seems to override your screen. When buying a monitor that
is over 120hz refresh, make sure that freesync over hdmi is also compatible with the other refresh options for your screen including xbox’s output options or avoid this issue all together and get a 120hz native freesync over hdmi screen. This also applies
to those with certain resolutions not being available when trying to use a certain refresh rate or vrr or both. A monitor might be able to display 1440p but only supports freesync at 1080p. The thing to look for is the native screen support. Theres also the
problem of some monitors only doing one or the other and marketing makes it seem fully compatible but thats more for shoppers to do their research when buying. The main issue here is the monitor losing compatibility and features that it is capable of when
setting the system to 120hz. This seems like a compatibility bug and a mass report to support on this would be greatly appreciated. It doesnt make sense that auto detect recognizes the vrr feature but 120hz doesnt when the screen is capable of vrr over hdmi
up to 144hz with a freesync window of 48-144hz (24-144 with lfc or low framerate compensation). More and more games are running some kind of performance framerate option and this will be a big problem among monitor owners. Im on xb1x by the way.
