Freeing up old gamertags, ever going to happen?

Daft: it's not used on other services, I registered it first, it was never deleted. No one else could have taken it in the first place.

Coop: I think the process of moving from XBL on XBox 1 (OG) to XBL on 360 was a bit 'messy'

They've got their stuff together now, but it's a shame so many accounts are lost. I'd GLADLY pay the $10 if I could get my old name back and infact I'd buy an Xbox One then...

Alas.

^I personally think it's silly you would let something like a gamertag stop you from enjoying an awesome experience on Xbox, but that' me.

Also I feel like some of the stuff the other guys are saying is true, they recycled all the old inactive gamertags from the original Xbox a long time ago now, it's how I got the one I'm using now so I don't think it's much of a stretch to say someone has
taken yours and let it go inactive which makes it appear like it's inactive from when you used it....

I won't deny it's a pretty petty reason but it's valid none the less. It's unfortunate, frustrating and just plain silly that such a thing is disabled / blocked - and not for good reason.

Orphaned accounts need to be able to be gotten again, the name space of the primary XBL database must be a real mess.

I'm selling them for $50!! They all start or end with with Snipez and may or may not have Xx or xX

Anyway, can't you just look up your old tag and try to remember the password?

No the old account is 'orphaned' it's no longer attached to an email (seriously) it's a database screwup from a decade ago.

They should just nuke it because it's been 10 years!

I had an original Xbox with GT . I had not played on the system for a long time and when I went to get a 360, I found that I could no longer access my account and the credit card I had used for Live was long gone (the only means of retrieval back
then was to have the credit card info). They released my name in that first batch and I was luckily able to get it back!

I've had the same issue. My original Xbox name on live was Coop. I didn't move to Xbox 360 right away it was about 4 months after release. When I transferred my account I was told Coop was a reserved name and I had to pick a new one. I lost two years of
my Xbox live tenure and till this day that account sits dormant with 4 friends on it.

I like my current name better so that's ok but I hate my tenure says 10 years when I have been solid with Xbox for 12

After what happened last time they released a bunch of unused gamertags I very much doubt they will announce it if they do it again.

Chances are your old tag has been released & someone has already taken it.
