    A subscription to Xbox Live has always been needed since Live was started back in 2002, this most likely will never change, you might be accessing the game for free but your profile, stats, achievements, saves and other bits are saved on Microsoft's servers,
    you also access the game through Microsoft's servers, you can get live for really really cheap for the entire year, you then get access to all the games with gold benefits too.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Gears of War 5 isn't free.

    Anyway, I would recommend Fortnite, It's a pretty good game.
