A subscription to Xbox Live has always been needed since Live was started back in 2002, this most likely will never change, you might be accessing the game for free but your profile, stats, achievements, saves and other bits are saved on Microsoft's servers,
you also access the game through Microsoft's servers, you can get live for really really cheap for the entire year, you then get access to all the games with gold benefits too.

Sony and Nintendo now require their online service for online play, so while it stinks to have to pay for Live, it does ensure stable secure service.

If that is your sole reason to go to a different console - that you can bypass a paid service to play one or two games - then by all means, enjoy your new devices. The rest of us, who believe it's fair that you pay for a service that you use, will continue
to enjoy our existing devices. If you're going the "free means free" route, then you would have to talk to your ISP to tell them that you should get to use their services for free since the game says it's free to play. I wish you luck on that.

While Fortnite and Apex legends are free to play games, Xbox Live Gold is required to play any multiplayer game and it wouldn't be fair to make an exception for just one game when paid games also need to pay for a subscription to play
online. It should also be considered that the subscription is not only for playing online, it is also for free games with gold, deals with gold, and other benefits such as messaging on Xbox Live.
