Free digital copy of Destiny for next gen consoles

I'm sure by now, everyone has heard the news that if you purchase/download Destiny for your Xbox 360, a complimentary digital version for your future Xbox One will be included. That's awesome, right?! A free game with your console you don't even own yet?!
Yes please!!

But wait. What about the disc purchasers? The ones who preordered and stood in line to buy their copies...? Is it fair that only a certain portion of the base market for the game itself be granted a future free copy for a console they don't even own yet
while others aren't? It seems only fair that if some people are getting something extra for simply purchasing the game, everyone should get it...

Bungie is offering owners of Destiny on Xbox 360 a free digital upgrade to the Xbox One version of the game, for a limited time, the developer has announced.

“For our fans who will be entering the Destiny universe first on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 we have some great news! For a limited time, whenever you buy a digital copy of Destiny, you will be able to download the next-gen version within the same console
family for FREE,” explains a post on the game’s website.

This deal includes all of Destiny’s different launch flavours, including the base game, the digital Guardian Edition and the Expansion Pass.

What’s more, once you’ve made the upgrade to Xbox One you’ll still be able to play the Xbox 360 version. However, the games are tied to your account, so you can’t game the system with a friend.

Bungie adds, “Whether you participate in this program or not, your Guardians, progress, stats, and gear are shared within a console family will be waiting for you when you transition to next-gen.”

why do people always want to complain these days? Digital can't be resold so it makes sense to get as many people to buy digital as possible. Get over it!

 

I get the marketing behind it but instead of snubbing a portion of the customer base, maybe make it the same for everyone? I'm sorry, I didn't realize asking for equality was complaining...

 

Crying equality now? So should developers give out preorder bonuses to everyone? What about exclusive weapons and gear that the LE people get? What about the extras the Sony people get? WE DEMAND EQUALITY!!!!!

PS: I have wanted equality in life for years but after 36 of them I realize that people do not want equality but to be better than the rest.

 

When you buy something digitally, it is tied to your account. When you buy a disc, it is not. Whose to say you didn't just borrow that game disc from your friend and claim it is yours? See what I am saying?

 

I totally see what you're saying. Proof of purchase should be good enough that it's your copy, ya? Receipts are wonderful for such occasions.

And I think we can agree that preorder perks are available to everyone, not just certain people, and definitely not on the same scale as a free game (which wasn't announced til after launch, thus not including the physical preorder group).

the free game was announced on the 5th, the game came out on the 9th, where is the issue?

I know a lot of people already had their preorders bought and paid for prior to 4 days before launch. If the purpose was to intice digital downloads vs disc purchases (which seems to be the consensus of why they're doing it), why wait 4 days before launch
and not announce sooner?

Grumbles all around I guess, too bad they didn't think about all of the customers when making decisions like this...

 

they think about $$$ only.

digital = no resale, no resale = people can't buy used = they have to buy new = $$ for them

they are thinking about themselves not you and me

 

I highly doubt MS is going to want to have everyone fax in their receipts for their free game. Again, whose to say that someone can't just pass around a receipt to each friend they have to get a copy.
The all-digital check keeps the "middle man" out of the equation, and it 100% ensures ownership.

 

Truth of the matter is that you have an entire industry pushing towards digital media. What better way to entice people into buying digital versions of their product then by offering incentive to do so, be it DLC, upgrades, etc. The offer is for digital
customers, you did not buy the digital version, therefore you do not get the upgrade. Plain and simple.

 

Like I said, I understand the marketing behind it and the push for going digital. That being said, I'll ask again. Why wait until so soon before launch and not months ago when thousands, maybe millions, preordered their hard copies? Dontcha think that would've
gotten a lot more people to go digital?

 

I honestly don't think it would have made that much of a difference. Five days or five months, who is buying this big of a title on the last generation right before they upgrade to the One or the PS4

This could also have been a last minute decision that came about as a way of helping secure a future console purchase.
