What exactly is down, what errors are received when attempting to play online, and when are these errors appearing whether it be on launch or when the game is already at its main menu?

• What device are you using? (Xbox, Windows 10)

I recommend to power cycle the device and test the network connection. Please take a look at the following troubleshooting
resources:

Xbox

• Restart your console
• Test your Xbox Live
  connection

Windows 10

Make sure you're connected to a network and that you can access the Internet.

• See if there's an Xbox Live service outage at Xbox
  Live Status.
• Sign in at
  Xbox.com
• Check your PC's clock. The clock must match the Xbox Live servers for sign-in to be completed. Your date and time settings for
  Set time automatically
  must be set to
  On.
