Fortnite wont start without XBL or Game Pass Ultimate

My Xbox Live Gold/Game Pass Ultimate recently expired and now when I try to start up Fortnite to play with my kids I get prompted to sign in (as normal) but then right after I sign in I get redirected to a page telling me to choose my plan (Xbox Game Pass for $14.99/month or Xbox Live Gold for $9.99/month). If I click No Thanks, I get sent back to Fortnite telling me an error occurred while signing me in.

I've searched online and Fortnite should be free to play online, right? Why am I being forced to purchase a subscription to play?

I tried closing out of Fortnite and restarting it, signing out and back into my Xbox account, as well as restarting my console.

F2p is only for xbox alpha skip insiders program

Series x isn't included yet as it hasn't joined the insidersprogram

Gold is required to play online. They are working on removing that feature for free-to-play games, but that hasn't started yet.

You can play without in free-to-play games like Fortnite, but all other games you have to have Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate.

Gold gives you the ability to play online in all games, whether they are in Game Pass or not.

Game Pass is like Netflix for games. You get access to library of games without having to purchase them all individually.

Game Pass Ultimate includes Gold, Game Pass for console, and Game Pass for PC. Since you already have Ultimate, if you were to buy Gold it would just convert it to Ultimate since you already have Gold.

Is Gang Beasts getting the same error that Fortnite is? (Fortnite actually no longer requires a subscription at all to play online).

If they're games from Game Pass, you would still need Gold (or Game Pass Ultimate) to play online. Only free-to-play games (like Fortnite, Fall Guys, etc.) can be played without Gold.
