You can try this:

Starting with the website method, you will need to click on the Sign in button which should be located in the top right corner of the screen. Click No in the message that appears and press the Sign in button at the bottom of the sign-in menu.

Enter your details and log in to your account. The login process should take you back to the main page and your username will appear in the top right corner of your screen. Click your name and then click the “Account” option at the top of the drop-down menu.

Your display name will be in the "General" tab and you can change it by clicking the pencil icon next to it.

If not, you can sign in to the Epic Games launcher and click your name in the bottom left corner. Click on Manage Account in the menu that should appear, and the Fortnite web page should appear on its own, which will take you to the last step of the initial method.

If you look at the settings from within the Fortnite game it will likely mention the email/username for the Epic account his gamertag is linked to.

The username was “McXXXXXxtalked to someone else about this they said that since fortnite was created before the xbox username expansion took place, that this would not transfer into the game, even if the game supported it. I have already changed my username again to something that displays in game, so it was just a frustrating -$10 gone.

Fortnite displays your Epic Games username in most cases, not your Xbox gamertag. Even though you’ve updated your gamertag, if it’s not syncing with Fortnite, the display name issue is likely linked to your Epic Games account rather than Xbox.

Please verify Epic games account changes by logging into the Epic games account settings and double-check that the username change was successful.

If your updated Epic Games username is displayed there, it confirms the change is registered on their end.

And it can take up to a few days for changes to Epic Games usernames to propagate across all servers.

I am almost certain xbox username is whats used on Fortnite. Don’t think I’m wrong here as I have a different display name on epic that is overridden by xbox name.
