Fortnite 'Needs more space' when launching

Hi all,

Writing here as not sure what my next steps are... Hoping one of you lovely lot can point me in the right direction!

So I have an Xbox One from last gen. Fortnite always worked, but suddenly (it MAY have been after an update but I can't say for certain) it would not launch.

I tried restarting my console - same issue.

I tried signing out, signing in - same issue.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game - same issue.

I tried uninstalling the game, resetting my console Keeping Games and Apps, installing Fortnite again - same issue!

I came to Xbox support and spoke to a couple members of the community via the Directly Gamers Chat, and I was asked to reset (as above) which didn't do the trick (but I didn't get back to the chat quick enough so it was closed).

I then came back to support (from a gamer) and said:

"When I launch Fortnite, it gives me a 'Not enough space' error (0x8007007 I think), prompting me to clear space to install the game.

Except the game is already installed... I have tried installing on both external drive (over 2.5TB free with Fortnite installed) and the internal storage (about 30GB free with Fortnite installed), but both lead to the same error.

As mentioned above, I have also tried resetting the console, but no dice!"

Unfortunately the gamer had exhausted their options and directed me to Epic Support:

"I'm sorry to hear that. I'm afraid our last resort here is to contact the game support on this link: https://www.epicgames.com/help/en-US/contact-us for further assistance and additional troubleshooting steps."

I reached out to Epic Support and after a couple days they got in touch and told me straight up that they won't help:

"Hello, in this case you need to contact directly with Xbox support https://support.xbox.com we do not troubleshoot console issues and this is not a Fortnite issue but a console error. Hope they can solve your issue soon so you can play with us."

When I come back to Xbox support, the Request a Callback option (the only option I can see is available to get in touch with Microsoft themselves) has been greyed out and unavailable for the past month or so.

So basically, I'm stuck and either need a way to speak to Microsoft themselves, or a way to prove that the issue is NOT console related so I can get Epic Support to help.

Any help or info would be much appreciated!

Alrighty, let's see what we've got here.

Out of curiosity, you said you tried going back to the Contact Us page for Xbox Support, and the call back option was greyed out. Have you tried connecting with an agent through chat?

That aside, here's a request for actual information I'll need to better help you:

The general model and the base storage available
The amount of storage currently in use on your Xbox (see directions on where to manage your Xbox storage just in case)
How much free storage is left

As a side note, it may be that you just have to do a clean reset, including an uninstall of the games. Your save data is automatically backed up on the cloud, so you don't have to worry about losing any of that. It's just the inconvenience and difficulty of reinstalling all the games that's probably the biggest downside.

Do you have enough space on your Xbox for Fortnite? You should be prompted to clear some space if not.

If not you will need to clear up some space, by uninstalling a game, or some apps.

If you are running low on space on your Xbox, you can always get a USB external hard drive to expand your total storage.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the Xbox One or the Xbox 360, but you can find more information about either console below:

Yes that hard drive has more then enough space and should work well with your Xbox One.
