Formatting External hard drive questions.

I just bought 4TB external hard drive for my Xbox one S. It prompted me to format it and I selected the non-media option.

1. Should a progress bar be displayed?

2. How long will it take to format?

I don't really know, but just make sure you don't do what i did with all my games on the drive, then format it to bring to a friends house, then have all your games be deleted...

Shouldn't have a progress bar, and a little but. When it's done the lights will not be flashing on the drive. Which one did you get?

Thanks. I got the Avolution HDDgear 4 TB. My concern was that the red light on front didn't appear to blink. It appears to me that Avolution uses a blue led (slightly visible NE edge of red led) to shift color to purple when active. That wasn't apparent
when looking down on it.

The drive also didn't show up in transfer screen until l restarted the Xbox.

From this link it appears there is no way to partition the External hard drive and use it for installed games.

Thanks for the information. I had read the installation/setup guide before I started. Since there was no progress bar and the drive light didn't seem to be flickering, I was looking for an estimated completion time which I didn't see in the guide. Something
like:

@5400 rpm 1 TB 20 minutes.
