  1. Formatting external drives for media/capture “locally” on Xbox

I bought 2x 8Tb external drives; 1 for game capture, and the other for game storage.

With the game storage, setting it up was a breeze…until I got to the other one for game capture

With the game capture, it was required that I disconnected the drive from the Xbox, format it on PC as NTFS, and then connecting it back to the console

Can there be a future update where we do not need a PC for the media/game capture drive? Imagine no PC is available or near-by at the moment of setting up.

How do I view captures that I copied to my external hard drive?

    Hello Khaji,

I am still not able to see my screenshots and game clips on my external hard drive.

The drop down menu between the "on the Xbox network," "On this Xbox console," and "On external drive" are there, but the external drive has nothing on it to view.

I have went through the process to copy the contents from the Xbox network and Xbox console to the external hard drive via the Manage option several times, but it says there are no captures on it when I select it afterwards.

The external hard drive is plugged in, is USB 3.0, and properly formatted to be media only

    Thank you,

Can you not use a 4TB hard disk for capturing clips on Xbox One X?

I just tried adding my Seagate Backup Plus portable USB3 hard disk with 3TB capacity for game capture purposes and it appears to work (I was able to assign it as capture location...haven't tried capturing any game play yet) as a capture location.

After you initialize and format your external HDD on your PC, did you create any folders on the external storage? In case it matters, I didn't after selecting GPT - Simple volume and format as NTFS with no file/folder compression enabled (in case the latter
    matters).

Did you rename your external drive during the format process? In case it matters, I did on mine and called it XBOXCLIPS1.

When you connected the HDD to the console, did it prompt you to use the drive for game or media storage? I selected media storage.

Did you go into Settings - System - Storage, select the HDD and then select Set as capture location? I did this in case it matters or is different than doing it via Settings - Preferences - Capture & share - Capture location (this UI location is also displayed
when using Xbox nexus button - move right to Capture & share - move down to Capture settings).

    Good luck!

External Hard Drive not available as capture location?

The Xbox will only format the drive in order to store games on it in a special Xbox format.

In order to use the drive as media storage or capture drive, you will have to format the drive on a PC. If MacOS has trouble with NTFS, I recommend asking a friend with Windows, or using Bootcamp on your Mac to dual boot into a native Windows installation
    to format your drive.

    Laggy game clips

Hello, first it's a pleasure to be able to help you today.

My name is welcome to the community.

Hello Chandler, you're taking these clip captures inside your Xbox HARD drive or on some external HARD drive if you have any external HARD drive so try setting it up as media and redirecting the captures to it.

Pictures and videos captured on my console are regularly erased

There is only a finite space on the console internal drive to store captures.

To my understanding, if you make a lot of game clips and screenshots that space is quickly used up and any subsequent captures will overwrite the oldest file on the drive if its full. This space is a reserved area in the system area and not the entire drive space.

If you upload your captures to the Xbox Network and/or OneDrive you can safely delete the captures on the internal drive using Manage captures on xbox console.

The alternative is to connect a external drive, formatted to NTFS, and change your capture location to the external drive. Be aware that this option doesn't allow sharing on the Xbox Network.
