Format external hard drive

If your external hard drive can not be detected on your xbox one, you can format it from your computer (i did mine from my mac). All i did is go to "disk" on my mac in the searchlight bar, then go to the hard drive and this part is the only tricky part,
some ppl will see partition when they click on their external hard drive and thats what you want to go to and then when you see format you will want to format it too MS-DOS FAT (or any fat you see), on my mac tho i saw "erase" as a tab and then it let me format
it that way but also deleting any thing on my hard drive. This took me 5 hours to find because xbox one support just keep sending me links and stuff that wasn't working.

Format external hard drive

Good morning,

I'm having a problem with an external hard drive (WD My Passport X). I formatted the disk from the xbox one, to use it for videogames. Now I want to come back and format it again for Music and Videos, because the device is not recognised by PC. How can I
do this?

I tried to format from "My devices" section of Settings, but I can only format it for games. Is there a way to format the hard drive for Music and Videos from the xbox or the PC?

Also if you wish to use the hard drive again on xbox you need to format it back to ntsc format. This is the only format the xbox and Microsoft use

Why must you format it to ntsc if it could not be detected in the first place?? And where would one find this "NTSC" format??

If you hadn't formated to Mac format you would've been fine

Since it starts off as fat32 and would've only needed to be formated via your xbox

But since you formated it using a Mac you need to use a low lvl disk or install a windows do or 7 if you have ai license and format it

Ms dos fat would've divided your he quite abit

You would need to make it one partition with ntfs format using s windows machine or a boot camped windows or parallels on mac

as per the other comments about the use of the external hard drive for the 360 I am in the update preview program which allows additional External hard drives to be used.I purchased the same Seagate 2tb external hard drive as per my xboxone but when I apply
the format on the xbox360 as per the instructions it replies with unable to format. Would like to know what external hard drives are compatible? I no the hard drive works as tried it on the xboxone after it would not format for the 360

Have you formatted the hard drive? If not, have a look here for instructions on how to do this on the console.

Thanks for the replies. We recommend trying to format the external hard drive on a PC. Make sure to format to NTFS. Also here is a guide for issues

detecting external hard drive. If the hard drive is not compatible with the console it will read it as a media device no matter the format.

Not sure what you wanted to do here, could you elaborate?

As for external hard drives, you can't partition them for use as both external storage for games and for use with your Mac or PC. You can use an external hard drive on the Xbox One as a media drive, though.

If you format an external hard drive for Xbox One games storage, the whole drive is formatted and the file system is changed.
