For Series X, do you have to re-purchase digital copies of games you owned on Xbox One?

We understand this will be limited to digital games only. But it won't be time limited. Any game you buy now that is a 'Smart Delivery' title will automatically provide you with the Series X version whenever you choose to buy a Series X after it releases.

And if you still own an Xbox One, your digital copy for that console will still be available to play or re-download if you uninstall it.

I own a physical copy of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I bought it in early 2020 and have been playing it on Xbox One.

It's as if the Xbox doesn't recognize I have the license for the game or something. In the store I can find the Modern Warfare digital copy for full price.

I can also find Warzone for free and it says "Includes Modern Warfare". Except it doesn't work.

If you own a physical (disc) copy of Call of duty, then it's the license for the disc version that you own. Since the Series S has no Blu-ray drive, any disc games you have installed will not work as they require the disc to prove ownership.

I'm afraid as the Series S has no optical drive, you will have to re-buy Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 as a digital purchase. This also applies to all other games you own on disc.

If this is not cost effective to you, then your only option is to buy a Series X, which does contain a Blu-ray drive.

nope, this has always been this way, the disc is the licence, the disc has to be present for licence auth, if no disc then you need to own the digital licence therefore purchase a digital copy, it has been well known that the consoles with NO disc drives require digital games only, this was the same with Xbox one digital and Xbox series s, if you want to run a disc then you need the series x.

This is the same on all platforms too.

You could try selling the disc copy privately to make the money towards buying the digital version.

Eventually discs will be discontinued on future consoles and then only digital will be available.

I play PC I own a lot of disc games from decades ago, but I have repurchased all digital as PC is 99% digital only now.
