You can block these users right from their profile. That will remove them as followers and they won't see your activity feed. You can also edit your privacy settings so that only your friends can see your info and feed.

What can you do if the follower remains in your followers list, How do you remove them

You can unfollow someone my clicking on their profile but I can confirm that with you blocking them it made them unfollow you. I've had a friend block me recently over a disagreement and he no longer appears on my friends list after he blocked me.

All I can say is I've got people on my "followers" list that I've blocked for 5 years and they still show up as followers. I've never found anyone in last 5 years who can actually solve this glitch. Good luck!
