Foam lining

I have a question. What purpose does the foam lining on the front edges of the Xbox 360 Slim's disc drive serve? I speculate that it is there to keep whatever dust that gets in away from the machinery.

Sadly they don't seem to be making the original headsets any longer, only the small blocky ones remain. I'm afraid that there isn't a way to order a replacement foam cover. Don't worry though, I've had my Halo 3 edition wireless headset for ages and it too
has lost the foam lining but I am able to use it just fine without it, in fact I can't tell the difference now.

 

I would happily spend 1200+ points on DLC that looked like this:

that, and it dampens the noise of the disc tray closing.

 

And any vibration of the disc drive
