Flight Simulator 2020 on Mac Pro 5,1 running Windows 10

Hi there,

I own the Premium version of MSFS 2020 and I'm trying to run it on my Mac Pro 5,1. Here's my configuration:

Dual Xeon x5690 processors (each running 6 cores at 3.46 ghz)

32GB DDR3 ram

Nvidia GTX 1080 6gb

1TB SSD

Windows 10 Pro (updated to latest version)

The machine, even though it's old, really has terrific benchmarks and still crushes a lot of machines. But it runs MSFS terribly. It's really slow.

I'm wondering if it's not taking advantage of the dual processors perhaps and only using one of them. Windows Pro is definitely seeing both processors, but perhaps flight sim isn't?

Any thoughts on how I can get the game to run better?

Essentially zero games ever used multiple processors due to difficulty keeping them sync’d. Even multiple GPU has fallen by the wayside for many titles, which FS2020 also doesnt support.

Dont forget there are additional instructions and functions added to newer processors as well. If younopen up performance monitor you should be abke to tell quickly whats up.

For most games your system will just use One CPU, the other one will just sit idle. Sure, Windows may see 12 cores, but games have to be specifically programmed to see two processors and since 99.9% of gaming machines out their have just one CPU and multiple
cores, having a machine with two processors is a bit of waste.

Your machine was designed for a specific task such as a Workstation or small server, not gaming.

Flight Simulator 2020 is at the moment CPU limited, even on modern processors. Due in the most part to being a DirectX 11 game. I'm not sure what the desktop equivalent of a x5690 is, but it's quite old now. It would be better than the minimum processor
that's for sure, but not by a massive margin.

The GTX 1080 is still a great card, but you're going to have to lower your settings. No current hardware can max out MSFS 2020, not even the RTX 3090, gets close though.

If you’re stuck on the Flight Simulator 2020 checking for updates loading screen, these are the fixes that players have reported:

Restart the game

Run as administrator

To do this, type ‘Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020’ in the Windows search bar, right-click, then run as administrator

Download latest Windows updates

Download latest Nvidia driver updates

Disable Windows firewall (I finally get off that screen when I performed this step).

None of these resolves the issue - I have done it all.
