  1. First person or third?

I have had an epiphany. I kept wondering why the elder scrolls games are so seductive and I finally figured it out last night. I downloaded Arcania and it made me think of other open world rpgs I've played. All of the others are third person. I find I am
not as likely to just wander off to look at the landscape or pick flowers in other games. True, ES is the most open world of any I have played. I can look anywhere and go anywhere I can do anything I want to without ever doing any actual quests and KoA, Arcania,
even the more open jrpgs like FF XII or Xenoblade Chronicles all tend to push me into a more linear mode. Even the horseback riding was better in Oblivion in first person. So, I have a question. If you play third person, why? What makes it better for you?

    :)

    First Person??

Hi. I last played GTAV on my X1 a few weeks ago. I played it again last night and there was a huge download of 4.6GBs. I installed that and then played the game, but I'm sure something weird has happened to the First Person (on foot) view when you
    aim-down-sights...

I'm sure it used to have a proper Iron Sights view, like CoD where both the sights on a rifle, SMG, pistol etc, line up directly in front of you, so the barrel is aiming directly towards the centre of the screen.

But now it seems that the sights don't line up in front of you, the stock of the gun is down towards 5 o'clock and the barrel now points towards the top-left of the screen.

Didn't the remastered GTAV have proper iron sights or did I dream that? Did this update change the ADS view? I can't see anything in the settings to change this...

    First person or third?

I do both actually, sometimes it's just a "feeling" I get while playing that determines which mode I use..... but mainly dependent on what I'm doing and why.

    .

I play in third person while traveling; mostly to see more of the beauty of Skyrim, but also for noticing distant movements in wider field of view, also use third for melee combat; for better situational awareness when enemies are trying to flank me, close
with me, or appear unbeknownst from behind. Eyes in the back of my head if you will...

    .

For ranged attacks I fall back on old habits, long since ingrained in me, and comfy, learned from my training as a Marine Scout/Sniper. I like to look down the barrel, so to speak, at my targets - so for offensive casting (non area affect spells) and archery
I fall back to FP. I am not expedient at third person ranged attacks, it just looks weird to me.

    .

My daughters are 90% 3rd, and don't seem to share my aversion to using it at range.

I hardly ever play in third person, but when I do, it's mainly when exploring to break up having to look at my glowing sword and shield all the time and to get a better/open view of my surroundings. The only other reason is to be vain and check out my armour
    from time to time.

  6. I always play first-person in combat. It's less floaty and hard to control.

    .

I will use third-person for exploring or just generally walking as I wear armour specifically for how it looks rather than how strong it is. You have to be able to see it for that to be a good decision.

  7. That makes sense. One thing I used to never do in first person and still only do in Falmer nests mostly is walk or sneak with a weapon or spell ready for use. It slows me down (though I did get the perk to move faster in sneak for my archer) and looks dumb.
I guess that comes of me never playing a first person shooter. At least in Skyrim third person looks good. I have to walk in Dragon's Zdogma because I hate the way I look when running.

    First person or third?

I always use first person for combat and tried third person once and would never even bother or think of using third person again.

I only go first person for bow shots.

For me, first person is hard to control. I feel like I'm walking around with blinders and no perception, and I die so often because I have no awareness of my surroundings in that view.

It's like trying to go through your day with your head in a carboard box with one side open a bit to see straight ahead.

That's how it feels for me. I rarely touch any game that's first person only.

I play 1st person in Oblivion because I don't like 3rd person in that game but I play 3rd person in Skyrim because as Springer said I feel like I have blinkers on in 1st person. I use first person to pick up loot sometimes though and for shooting arrows.

  11. Third person in Oblivion makes you feel like you are 3 feet high in a world made for giants. That bugs me even in first person. I agree that the first person in Skyrim could use some peripheral vision but in a dark room with a big screen it comes pretty
close to real. I am constantly looking around me in Skyrim to avoid being attacked from behind. I never really felt that part was helped by being in third enough to warrant the loss of immersion.

I'm just the opposite as some of the others. I can't seem to wrap my head around the controls in third person. Only when looking for something I lost. I have figured out how to move sideways and straight while keeping my head moving. Kind of like looking
around while walking. Always play in first person no matter what.

  13. First person or third?

I think that's why many didn't like the horseback riding in Oblivion. My son disliked it because he couldn't steer in first person. For me, since I have ridden horses, first person was natural and felt right. You put the crosshairs between the horses ears
and turn your head to where you want to go. Of course if you wanted to look around you had to stop but you have to do that on a horse as well or you'll find yourself in the rough.

    .

I tried third person in Skyrim when I had to have the fist fight in Markarth. It didn't really help me stay aimed at the fighter and it sure wouldn't help against Foresworn. I can handle third person in something like KoA or Arcania where I don't need any
finesse to swing my sword. I can just get in their face and whale away at the foe but that doesn't really work for me in Skyrim.

  15. I play in third person to admire how my character works. Also, I think it makes combat a little more interesting.
