First name change, being charged $10.

I got a new Xbox, I set my account up with no issue and renamed myself just fine.

My girlfriend wanted an account, but she can't rename herself at all because it tells her she needs to pay to change it. She hasn't changed it before. So she's stuck with the random TerrificHarp670, which is an awful name... I just put $500 into a new Xbox,
and then she can't even name herself?

Unable to change gamertag for free - please help

Hello.

I am trying to change my gamertag for the first time. However, the system is prompting me for a credit card which will be charged 10 dollars. I read that the first time is free as a courtesy from Microsoft. I appreciate this and would like to take advantage
of this gesture. However it does not seem to be working as advertised and I cannot change it without being charged 10 dollars it seems. I have never changed my gamertag before from what I remember.

Please help.

I thought you were meant to get a free name change for the first time but instead xbox live charged me 800 microsoft points and all my mates say i should contact xbox can any one tell me why i didn't get a free first name change.

Before 2013 you were given a choice for your names

After that you had a defaulted name after which you could change your name that's where the first name change comes from

 

It's not Terrific Harpy... It's TerrificHarp670, which was the name of her profile when we first made it, the name on this new profile we made today was not changed. What are you saying 2013? I said in the original post this is a brand new Xbox. You also
didn't even read the name I entered...

This account is BRAND NEW, we just made it. We've never renamed it, and she doesn't like harps. So why would she name herself such a dumb name?

 

For a bigger picture. We debated on PS4 or Xbox. I grew up on Xbox, she grew up on PS. So she's never had an account before, we just set it up. I set my new account up the same way because I wanted to start from scratch since my old account was from when
I was 13ish. I'm 21 now so I figured now's the time if ever.

I made my new account and renamed it. Then we tried to do the same for hers, and we can't. I really don't want her first experience with the Xbox to be a bad one, but we're off to a rocky start since we've already spent over half a grand on this console,
and it's telling her she needs to pay more to even pick a name.
