Finally got around to finishing Alan Wake and...

The story was my least favorite thing about this game. I thought it was too hokey.

 

Pretty much good things from what you peeps have written, might be worth grabbing it. Especially given its probably about a fiver now.

And haha if it freaked your missus out it is a winner. Aar lass often watches me gaming so if it gives her the heebyjeebies bonus .

 

My brother played it and never finished it. I never played it myself, but I've been considering starting a new game and seeing if I can get into it. Looks like a lot of fun and from what I saw the story is quite good.

 

Grey and Black Bones, you guys needs to get on it! I actually really enjoyed the story, but my most favourite thing was the combat. It never really got old exploding the enemies with flash bangs etc.

I also really enjoyed exploring the areas!

 

Going to grab this on Friday Assassin, sounds like I missed a gem. Haha exploding enemies , definitely grabbing this one.

 

^^ You'll like it. It has some really strange characters. It is definitely an atmospheric game.

 

GreyPilgrim, if you're a fan of the show, Twin Peaks, you'll REALLY like it. There are a lot of references to the show.

Also, yes exploding enemies! Haha, there is nothing more satisfying then watching a group run towards you, only to drop a flash bang at your feet and listen to the noise of them exploding/popping. I love that sound!

I enjoyed Twin Peaks but I will lie if I say I understood it in the least Nogga. Saw it for £4 in CEX so it will be mine Friday. Just got to finish Alien before I start anything else but looking forward to this. Nice one guys .

 

It was a good little game but not worthy of being an exclusive in my opinion.

Unless Microsoft had Remedy doing a number of other projects behind closed doors, I will never understand why they gave such a huge development time for a small fan based genre (I think it was around 6 years in the making). Then you have them pushing Turn10
to throw out a Forza game (or two) every year.

But as soon as I do get a new 360 I will be buying this game. I know on the original you got a free DLC. I take it the other came out much later?

 

Alan Wake's exclusivity was no different from Mass Effect 1's, or Gears of War 1's. They were published by Microsoft so wouldn't appear on rival platforms, but did become available on PCs under Games for Windows. S'not about worthiness... {=D

The long development was due to the game being much grander in scope originally. When you play it you get a sense of that scope the first time you enter a vehicle. It was going to be this big open-world survival horror with a compelling story. But I figure
there was a difficult balance between freedom and story, and that was taking time, and story eventually won (probably at publisher prodding) so the game became more linear, and would be at last put out.

Games like Forza, FIFA and so on have rapid turnarounds because it doesn't take much to juggle assets that already exist. Triple A games built from the ground up usually have development times ranging from two to four years. Unless there are hiccups, like
new hardware coming out, a new publisher coming in, losing some staff, new development techniques emerging, an evolution of, or a even a change in game engines, a new creative direction for a title etc... which stretches dev times out considerably sometimes.

 

It was only free if you bought a brand new copy of the game. If the code hasn't already expired (the game came out 4+ years ago), then you'll get it free.
The 2nd DLC came out a few months after the game came out, and then there was a stand-alone XBLA Alan Wake game which came out a couple years ago.

 

I actually played it not too long after I originally replied to this topic. Glad I did too because it was so much fun. I am thinking about grabbing the DLC soon just to extend the game, but the only problem I had with the game was the ending, it just felt
way too easy.

Anyways, great game, I feel stupid for not playing it sooner.

Effect 1 wasn't a Games for Windows title. It came to the PC when EA bought Bioware and the publishing deal Microsoft had with Bioware didn't cover the PC.

Microsoft could have kept the first game exclusive but chose to give up the console publishing rights.
