File explorer data

Now that the File explorer app is gone is it possible to transfer the downloaded files that you had on it to an external storage device or is that data gone for good? I've heard that you can still access that data if it was on such a device already so
I'm wondering if its worthwhile to buy an external storage device to recover and access those files or is it now too late?

Hi Syncdom,

Thanks for coming to the forums. Unfortunately, you would of needed to have them on the external already. Trying to put them on there now wouldn't work as the app is discontinued.

As stated by the
Xbox Insider Twitter page, "The app has been removed due to limited usage." If there are any features that you would like to see in the future we recommend that you use the
Xbox Idea Hub, as this is an outlet that is used directly by the engineers that work on the Xbox directly.

The data that Microsoft got was that hardly anyone used the app, so they removed it so they could use the resources for something else. As for what app to use now for your media. You could try the Media Player app, which you can download from the

Microsoft store.
