Hi, can anyone help fix this isdue. My Son is a huge Fan of FH 4 and has achieved so much. He has a whole garage full of cars that he’s custom wrapped, but all of a sudden the game will not allow the cars to reverse or reach high speeds. Every single car just chugs along and won’t accelerate. Can anyone make any suggestions as to how to fix the problem.

I don’t want to delete the game and re-download because he’s he’ll loose all his cars.

    :)

Hi, Thank you for that suggestion. I'll check if I need an update on that. His controller works of Fortnight and Minecraft but maybe it's some sort of weird glitch. Thanks so much for posting that link, that's really helpful.

Not heard of this before.Could be a controller issue so check for a controller update or try another controller if possible.

You'll probably be better off posting this on the Forza forums HERE

Oh Wow, this is amazing. Thank you... I'm a mum who has no idea about gaming systems so I'm very blind to how all this works. I'm so sorry. I'll get back on his Xbox 1S later today with him as he understands more about it than I do and we will go through all of your suggestions together. Thank you so much for adding all this in for me, its very difficult to get to grips with all the tech and troubleshoot when you are not very knowledgeable about it.

Thank you so much and I'll post again later with an update!

    Hi Amanda,

Can you post a clip of the problem and let us know what troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried? - Just so we have more of an insight and a clearer understanding on this. This would help identify and pinpoint exactly what’s causing the issue, hopefully finding a solution.

Certainly a strange issue, I personally haven’t come across this before in-game. If I remember correctly, there was reported to be an acceleration problem in the FH3 demo. - Similar to what you’ve described where cars don’t launch correctly, reach it’s top speed, and difficulties reversing. This shouldn’t be happening with the full game of FH3 and FH4 though.

    1. Are you referring to the Steam or Microsoft version of FH4? And a digital download or physical disk copy?

    2. What console is your son experiencing this issue on - Xbox One, Series X|S, PC (Windows 10), or on a phone or tablet through

    cloud gaming?

    3. Is this issue affecting all owned cars or only certain ones in-game? Does this only occur in certain areas on the map, any particular terrain - road types, mountains, grass, snow?

    4. Has there been any recent changes to your setup?

Forza Horizon 4 receives monthly updates. Update 35 (series 35) was released not long ago, on May 4th - did you notice any performance issues before this update?

Keep in mind there are currently FH4 Known Issues which are being addressed and worked on.

You can also check the official Forza support page on Twitter @forza_support for any confirmed news, updates, and fixes.

There are a few things that come to mind here, multiple reasons and various possible causes to this. This is most likely being caused by your in-game settings, although I’ll try to cover all possibilities and explain everything else, highlighting the most important information and troubleshooting steps in order of priority here.

First close the game and restart your console. Be sure to wait at least 10-15 seconds before reconnecting the power to completely reset the power supply. Sometimes there’s just a random “glitch” that can easily be fixed with a power cycle. Always best to start with the simple solutions first :)

If you’re able to, try another controller and see if that helps. Try both a wireless and wired connection if possible, preferably an official Microsoft one as third party controllers usually cause these type of issues.

Also update the controller, if an update is available.

Update your Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Support

If your son has a steering wheel type setup, refer to:

FH4: Wheel Setup and Tuning | Forza Support

    and

FH4: Supported Wheels and Devices | Forza Support

Check if the in-game settings are set to manual transmission. If the manual option is enabled and your son isn’t shifting, then the car would be maxing out in first gear. From the in-game menu go to Settings > Difficulty and enable automatic under “shifting”.

If the “damage and tyre wear” setting is set to “simulation”, the engine and tyres as well as the body of the car, can be damaged. In this case, cars can be difficult to control to the point where they’re practically impossible to drive or launch at all, depending on the level of damage. This is just a feature to make driving more realistic in Forza and to give yourself more of a challenge, so it can also help practice and improve driving skills. The car damage is reset whenever it has the opportunity to, such as when you change your car or reload the game. I suggest to set the “damage and tyre wear” setting to either “none” or “cosmetic”.

Turn off or decrease assists (steering, breaking etc.)

Refer to the photo (these are my game settings, feel free to set your own preferences):

Also adjust the controller settings in the in-game menu (you can select one of the default layouts or create a custom one). The RT button is to accelerate and LT is to reverse, unless you change it.

Make sure the cars are tuned correctly (tyre pressure, gears, differential etc). This is different for each individual car, every car has it’s own setup.

When you earn or purchase a car in FH4, the car is automatically correctly tuned and setup by default

(you can add improvements and optimisation if you prefer). So the car should be manageable to drive, unless the tuning isn’t setup correctly - this can happen with cars purchased through the Auction House as the original owner may have adjusted the tune before selling it. If needed, you can always reset the tune to default in

setup manager, and there’s a description explaining each

setting. Also consider the stats of each car such as the torque, handling, weight, drivetrain, top speed etc. (car upgrades can be applied at the festival or at one of your owned houses in the game). FH4 car tuning guide

Confirm that the speed is correctly displayed on

the speedometer, which should be accurate and

reflect that it’s reached the top speed (the speedometer would turn red with the line on the last gear when it reaches the limit, and top speed of course depends

on the type of terrain and each individual car).

Remember that there are different units in the game - km/h and mph (metric and imperial) so it may look like you’re going slower if you have the mph option selected (100mph would be 160kph, for example). You can select your preference in “HUD and gameplay” settings. Also note that there is sometimes a “bug” with a car in FH4 which Playground Games fix in regular updates. The units on the speedometer in the car’s interior view may also appear different to the one you’ve set - weather it shows mph or km/h in interior view varies, and depends on each individual car model.

Be sure to save your settings so any changes take effect (the game will confirm if you want to apply the adjustments made, select accept and continue).

If you have all the above settings enabled then, theoretically, you shouldn’t experience any complications with driving cars in the game.

My other thought on this is latency and your PC specs (if on PC), particularly the Hard drive, RAM, GPU, and CPU. This would affect the FPS (frame rate per second). Also your monitor refresh rate (Hz) is the number of times an image refreshes on the screen. So the higher the FPS and refresh rate; the smoother the gameplay, although none of these factors would only affect the cars performance and not other aspects in the game. Still might be worth looking into this though.

FH4 PC Specs (both minimum and recommended).

If on PC, confirm all the device drivers are updated to the lasted version. Tips to improve PC performance

    and

Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store | Microsoft Support

and try Clear the Delivery Optimisation cache | Microsoft Support

Also manage apps and processes in task manager

as there could be a service running in the background that’s slowing down your system. Turn off all unnecessary, non-essential background processes and applications then restart your PC. Then allow Windows Security to optimise performance and take care of your system for you.

Troubleshoot gameplay issues on a Windows 10 device | Xbox Support

If it’s a latency issue, this is where it gets a bit difficult as this could be caused by your Wi-Fi network (if playing online), Xbox controller, TV/Monitor, or perhaps even other hardware or software in your setup. Performance could also be affected by installed anti-virus software and/or certain system settings. If the steps above haven’t resolved the cars performance in-game, then this is likely being caused by input delay/latency. If this is the case, post back and I’ll continue to troubleshoot this with you.

As a last resort, I suggest to uninstall and reinstall the game as the files may have been somehow corrupted somewhere. I understand this isn’t ideal but should work if all else fails. Don’t worry, your son won’t lose any of his in-game items (including cars).

As long as you’re connected to Xbox Live, game saves are synced to your Xbox profile. So even if you were to reset your Xbox or PC, or installed the game on another compatible device; all your progress will still be there. This is confirmed here:

Xbox cloud game saves FAQ | Xbox Support

The only thing to consider when deleting a game is that it can take a while for it to reinstall, especially for a big game like FH4 which is 62.9GB (not including the DLCs and add-ons). This would depend on your download speed and how stable and reliable your internet connection is, as well as any other connected devices. A reinstall or reset should help with general performance and any errors though so I recommend trying this.

    Hi Amanda,

I noticed you marked my reply as an answer. I’m just curious and interested as to exactly what caused the issue. Did you have to reinstall

the game? Was it the game settings? The controller?

And I understand you mentioned this was on Xbox One.

I still included all the information and troubleshooting steps for PC though, in case it helps others that come across this thread with the

    same question :)

Either way, I’m glad this is all sorted and resolved for you. If you have any further questions or concerns, I’m happy to help! :)
