FF XIII and other Square-Enix titles no longer work

I purchased the Wireless Adapter for Xbox One controllers for use with my Windows 10 device, and for its maiden voyage, I decided to try out Final Fantasy XIII, purchased through Steam. It seems that the controller no longer works properly in Windows 10
with these (slightly) older titles. Whenever there is a change in the menu type (for example, when a hand cursor appears with a list of options), all input to the game ceases, whether by keyboard or controller, until the controller is powered off and back
on again. Then it works again... until the next menu change.

The same issues occur whether plugged in or wireless.

It seems that the problem can be traced to the driver included in Windows 10 - people had been reporting this issue during the Windows 10 previews. One person found a work-around:

I had this problem last night. It's the default Xbox driver that was installed with Windows 10.

I didn't have to download anything, but that might be because I did an upgrade from 8.1 to 10, so your experience might me slightly different. There is not need to delete the previous driver either.

To solve the issue:

Go to device manager

Select the Xbox Controller

Right click and select "Update driver software"

"Browse my computer for driver software"

"Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

And then select "Microsoft Xbox One Controller" instead of the previously installed "Xbox Controller"

It all worked again after that.

Could it be that they removed DirectInput support from new that driver?

However, I do not have access to the "Microsoft Xbox One Controller" driver that he refers to, likely a previous driver for Windows 7 or 8.1. It simply does not appear in the list of options.

Additionally, I have contacted Square-Enix, who replied:

We apologize for the trouble and inconvenience that you have been experiencing. At this time, many Square-Enix titles are encountering problems when started on Window 10. This is due to the early release status of this new operating system. As a result, you
may encounter strange bugs, the game may crash, or the game may not even start. Unfortunately, we currently do not have the support for this new operating system, but we can suggest keeping the game, hardware drivers, and operating system up to date as a resolution
can come from any one of those sources.

Nor was this terribly helpful.

I have contacted support systems with Microsoft by chat and by phone, and some have suggested updating the firmware on the controller. I would love to try this, but the only way to update the firmware is by connecting it to a Xbox console. I do not have
a console, only a PC, and do not have access to one. There is little way to know if that would even solve the issue - especially since, reportedly, it worked just fine with the old driver.

So we need another new driver. And a way to update the firmware without a console. Any feedback on when these might occur? Any other suggestions?

Oh no, not another one




XIII was barely even an RPG, let a lone a good FF installment. Square/Enix needs to go back to the drawing board before they dish out more of the crap they've been serving.

 

Final Fantasy 7 HD Remake

The reason that FF VII has such a hype is due to the era it came out in and the sentimental values behind the game which is why there is such a debate on which is better as I can almost guarantee that your favorite FF game is the first one you played after
FF III was released. And guys, Square Enix know exactly what they are doing and FF VII remake is a Plan B if you will, but it won't be for long as they will release it just before the hype for the remake is lost, because unlike most companies, Square Enix
are the best for listening to what the majority want while listening to the minority at the same time. On top of that I have to completely disagree with FF XIII being "abysmal" as it was very interesting how they took steps back to make that game. I mean to
make 7 games after FF VII and then create FF XIII which was so identical to FF VII whether you agree or not, of course the game-play felt different because its advanced so much and they need to keep it appealing but the simplicity of FF XIII and the general
structure behind it was just perfect in my opinion. And of course that's a personal view but because FF VII was so sentimental to me that is why FF XIII was such a WOW factor and I know that, but all I am saying is just be patient as whatever game it was from
Square Enix that you played for the first time with your brother, or your sister or something important happened that day, they are the games we desperately demand and desire more of so whether it was FF IV or FF IX, whatever! They know what they are doing
and just wait your turn, they will make a game that covers every aspect you want it to, guaranteed!

 

Please try the latest preview release of 10586, it solves a bunch of problems in earlier builds around games and input. Please note that there are still games that may not have certain buttons functioning the same, but input ceasing to work should not be
an issue.

 

I don't use the preview releases as I am not a developer - when will this be made available to consumers?

 

I believe the 12th November PST on Windows Update.

 

I spent half the day updating to Windows 10, version 1511, 10586 on my desktop computer. Additionally, through the Xbox Accessories app (which seems to have benefited from the mass update), I was able to push an update to the controller itself.

However, there is no change in the errors in-game. I still lose input control every time the cursor-type menu appears, and the only solution is to shut the controller off, and power it on again.

 

While I am still having the issue, another player on the Steam forums mentioned a work-around. It seems that with the latest update, you can press the two triggers (otherwise unused in the game), and the controller will resume functioning. It is a better
work-around than unplugging/replugging the controller, or powering it off and back on, but is, of course, still a work-around.

 

If pressing triggers fixed it for you, then this points squarely at a game issue, most publishers reuse the same input engine, it may be worthwhile to engage their support to understand if they have a patch.

 

As mentioned in the first post, I have already reached out to them, and they refuse to offer any support for the game in Windows 10. Also, with a little more testing, the trigger work-around is only marginally useful. Sometimes it takes just a press or two,
but other times it seems to take a couple minutes of mashing before the controls start responding again.

 

GamerTuld - Ha, I read Square Enix's response. They basically said, "We are not going to fix these issues, so it is up to the community to fix it."
