  1. [Feature Request] DVR & Live TV App with Support for Network Tuners and External Storage

First, I'd like to say that I love my Xbox One and use it daily! I appreciate the vision to have the Xbox One be the "All in one. Input one." However, the execution of this vision, so far, has been less than ideal for me.

I have cable TV service in the US from Comcast. I also have a custom built HTPC running Windows 7 Media Center with a Ceton InfiniTV 4 tuner card, which eliminates my need for a cable set-top-box and provides a far better DVR and on-screen guide experience
    than the Comcast STB.

The HDMI pass-through functionality of the existing TV app works with my setup, but in a less than ideal way. Aside from the issues I have seen others also report with images freezing and general unresponsiveness when navigating WMC menus, the Xbox One
IR blaster is not able to control my HTPC. As a result, I am unable to use the OneGuide to change channels, and I still have to use a separate remote to control my HTPC.

Rather than expecting my particular setup to work perfectly via HDMI pass-through and IR blasting, what I would prefer to see is a native TV app for Xbox One that can work with a network tuner (e.g. Ceton InfiniTV or SiliconDust HDHomeRun). Ideally, this
app would in itself be a DVR with the ability to schedule, manage, and playback series and single-instance recordings, leveraging the support of external storage so the internal storage is not quickly filled up with HD quality recordings. This would completely
eliminate the need for an STB or HTPC to watch TV (live or recorded). Furthermore, it would better realize the Xbox One vision to truly be "All in one. Input one."

Even without a native app, opening up the platform to allow 3rd party developers to create their own apps to support this functionality would be greatly appreciated. Ceton has done an excellent job with their "My Media Center" apps for Windows, Windows
Phone, iOS, and Android. I'm sure they would love the opportunity to develop similar functionality for Xbox One.

    :)

Xbox One’s new DVR feature only works with...

    ...external harddrive, Win10 devices.

    http://www.geekwire.com/2015/heres-...-with-external-hard-drive-windows-10-devices/

A Microsoft spokesperson confirms you’ll only be able to record TV if you have an external hard drive. You won’t be able to use the console’s internal memory because the company wants to keep the “[storage] paths optimized” by keeping the different filetypes separate, according to GameSpot.

Microsoft recently partnered with Seagate to announce a 2 TB external hard drivedesigned specifically for Xbox One and Xbox 360. The device would offer plenty of storage space when it launches later this year, but it does cost $110.

GameSpot also reports that a feature that allows users to transfer recordings from their Xbox to a mobile device will only work with Windows 10 machines. Android and iPhone users, for instance, can still pause live television on an Xbox One console, but they won’t be able to transfer files to watch on their smartphone later.

And, of course, the final requirement is a TV tuner, which doesn’t come built in with Xbox consoles right now. A Hauppauge WinTV-955Q does the trick, but it costs $80.

Microsoft will roll out the new DVR features in 2016, and it certainly will be a big step forward for many cord-cutters. But — like most things in tech — there will be some drawbacks.

Well looks like I'm going to finally buy an external hard drive. Still sucks that we won't be able to save it to internal storage but I understand. I'm ok with it.

Not sure if anyone else would be happy to cough up cash for the "free" DVR feature. Could be wrong.

Xbox A.I. TV (Beyond Smart TV!)

Xbox A.I. TV (Beyond Smart TV!)

I'm just gonna throw this out there even though I already see the positioning for it to occur...
Xbox One + Kinect 2.0 + Xbox Live + Powerful Gaming experience + Xbox Apps + Live TV +TV Tuner & Cortana = THE WORLD'S FIRST A.I. ENTERTAINMENT CONSOLE! Heralding another world first... A.I. TV!

Beyond Smart TV! - Xbox A.I. TV!

    'Achievable ONLY WITH KINECT!'

I feel it coming, but it'd also be great to get some focused votes in on his as well! The premise of an A.I. interactive Console is massive... all devs need is to imagine it clearly and act on that.

Here’s a small sample of where I see this going: Voice alert received via SmartGlass or Windows phone.

    Cortana:
Good Afternoon Ancient Weapon, I have outstanding news for you! While using Windows sometime ago, you indicated on Fandango that your favorite movies are Marvel movies. You also went to see the Avengers: Age of Ultron that day.

I noticed you really enjoyed the movie as you recently rated it with Five Stars! I’m sure with a rating like that you’re just dying to see it again!

So the good news is the movie is now available to you three ways on the Xbox One. Believe it or not, I’ve detected via the OneGuide that there’s a special “World Premier” showing on Spike TV starting in about 15 minutes with limited commercial interruptions. (Pending acceptance of requested features like Cortana oneguide integration,Cortana on Xbox & Cortana )

I wanted to alert you much earlier, but you indicated ‘Do not disturb’ while you were in your meeting.

I know how much you hate missing the start of a show, so I thought I’d ask if you’d like me to record this showing on Spike TV, (Pending acceptance of DVR requests: Cortana oneguide integrationXbox One DVR functionality with Digital TV Tuner & SmartGlass One Guide Record Option for DVR users) especially seeing that you’re still a bit more than 15 minutes away and in currently in slow moving traffic.

(Arrival Time estimation and Xbox User Tracking and requires acceptance of a uservoice request: Xbox GPS Location Awareness & Tracking using Cortana and/or SmartGlass enabled Smart Devices)

Me: Wow thanks for the alert Cortana! That actually doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but thinking about it, I’d rather see the movie again with absolutely no commercials, so let’s not record the Spike TV premier showing!

Cortana: Sure thing Ancient, I certainly understand wanting to relive that movie experience! Just to let you know, you do still have other viewing options on the Xbox One, in fact the movie is available in its original format on Xbox Video and it offers great SmartGlass Companion support! Would you like me to rent the movie in HD for $4.99 using your preferred purchase method? (Feature requires acceptance of Use Cortana to Purchase or Rent content and/or items on Xbox One)

Me: Oh heck yeah, that’d be great, I plan to watch it as soon as I get home!

Cortana: Very well, Done! The movie is now rented for the next 24 hours! By the way, your Brothers and your Son indicated this was also one of their favorite movies ever!

Would you like me to invite them to ‘Party View’ (this feature available pending uservoice acceptance of App Parties for Xbox One apps - Shared app experiences!) the movie with you? Their phones indicate via GPS that they are home! (This feature also pending acceptance of a uservoice request: Xbox GPS Location Awareness & Tracking using Cortana and/or SmartGlass enabled Smart Devices)

Me: That’s a great idea Cortana, definitely; invite them!

Cortana: Very good! Invites have been sent out via Xbox Live!

Ok, so once you’re home and on your network, I’ll boot up the Xbox One for you via SmartGlass and when I see everyone in front of their sensor’s, I’ll start the party and get the movie cued up and ready to go for all of you! (This feature also pending acceptance of a uservoice request: Xbox GPS Location Awareness & Tracking using Cortana and/or SmartGlass enabled Smart Devices as well as Deep Cortana-Kinect 2.0 Sensor Integration)

Me: Thanks, You’re the best Cortana, see you at home on the Xbox!

Cortana: Alrighty, see you then Ancient!
