  1. Family Newbies - advice needed

We have recently picked up an XBox 360 (mainly for our kids aged 9 and 10) and we are trying to see what the best (and safest) way is that we can set it up for them to play online. They have Avatars on the box and so far our son has played with the FIFA
game. We are now trying to use some of the "online" games including Minecraft.

My wife and I both have xbox profiles created and my wife actually has signed into hers on the console.

Our kids do have Google accounts that we use on their Android / Chrome devices but they are not allowed email / social media access.

    We have been looking here:

Add a new member to your family on Xbox One

but we do not see the option to do that on our XBox. Is that not possible on XBox360 ?

Some of the things we are wondering:

    1. Can we allow our kids to play online without their having their own online accounts....can they play underneath one of ours ?

    2. Are there free options that we can use to set this up or must we pay for an account ?

    3. What are the security controls we can exercise ?

We are both total XBox newbies and we need hand holding through this

    Thanks in anticipation

    :)

    What to expect?

^^ This is very good advice. It should be mandatory for all newbies.

On the 360, each account would need their own gold subscription in order to play online. Their accounts can be set up as free online accounts, but they won't be able to play online without gold

This should help with security settings - Parental Safeguards for Xbox Live and Your Xbox 360 Console

Do all of them have a GOLD Membership? It is something you buy to play online with others.

hi thanks for the suggestion - i can understand that having gold would benefit if they were playing other friends online but in this case the two of them are just wanting to play together on the same console but i cant understand why they cant play Minecraft
as a twoplayer game since they say they have done so on their dads console -i believe they their dad did have a gold membership but apparently this has expired but they still can play two player.

If there's a split screen option or LAN (Local area network) they can play together without gold otherwise it is considered online play even if they are on the same console so they would need gold in order to play together. I have been through this with
my kids as well. They aren't allowed online to young imo so they have to stick with games that allow split screen or co-op without having to be online or a gold member.
