that's a trickier question. I was scammed with an unofficial slim hard drive on ebay when I got my first xbox 360, so was unaware of scams, etc.

1. an official microsoft hard drive will come in 250GB or 320GB sizes. The 320GB official one comes with a lego star wars download code.

2. The packaging. A regular box or bubblewrap, rather than microsoft packaging, unless its second hand, will most probably be fake.

3. It won't run xbox original games if it is fake. It will come up with an error message in most cases.

4. fake drives usually spawn on ebay, or other bidding sites. I ordered my real one on amazon, the 320GB one.

5. Sometimes the casing can be almost flawless, but may be missing the microsoft logo or holographic seal if fake. Some fakes also have odd serial numbers on the back.

6. fake drives will most likely be cheaper than official ones. That's how they draw people in.

To be honest, you are better off ordering one from specialist game websites to know you're getting an official one.
