Failed Xbox One Console - Just out of warranty.... Continued from General Discussion Forums

Apologies if anything written in these threads seems written out of frustration but I am very disappointing in Microsoft.

At the end of my first thread I reported that I had found a resolution to my issue. Just in case the above link does not work for you for whatever reason I will recap what happened.

I purchased this console on launch day. I was lazy and did not pre order the console but was able to get the only one I could find at a local Target store after calling and going to several stores, so this is not a "Day One" branded console. Around the
end of January this year I started getting a message during game play that said that there was a local save game issue and I needed to go into system settings and clear local saves. I would do this and it would re-sync with the cloud the next time the game
was loaded. Thanks got for this or things would have been worse if saved game data was lost. I continued to randomly have this issue from time to time. It did not bother me the first time even though it did not make much sense but after 3 or 4 times I started
to get concerned that something was wrong with the console. Not long after that the system would sometimes freeze up on the home screen or apps would just quit while using them and then one day I got the local save game message again while playing Dying Light
and when I went to clear the local saves and as soon as I selected it to clear the system freezes and reboots all the way to the green Xbox Screen as if the system was being turned on after being completely turned off. The system would not boot or go any
farther than the green Xbox screen. I tried all the usual things like turning it off and unplugging it for a few min and turning it back on, tried low resolution booting it, etc, etc. I ended up calling MS tech support for Xbox and they were completely useless
and they do not know anymore than you or I. After about 30 min he suggested I send it in for repair and my console was about 4 months beyond the standard 1 year warranty. Shame on me for not getting the extended warranty!! I know better but what is done
is done. MS wants a 115.00 flat rate fee for whatever is needed to get you a working console.

Frustrated I decided to tap into the internet and ran across the offline update instructions on the Xbox One support pages and found that there was a tool that you can copy to a USB flash drive and restore the console to factory defaults. This worked for
me and I felt good about getting it back. I had to go through setting the Kinect up and adding my gamer tag and what not but it all worked....for about a week. Console started freezing and eventually would never boot up again. This time offline update tool
was not going to work.

So I was at a cross road. Do I open a repair request and pay 115 bucks and wait a month like I did when the Kinect died and I had to send it to them? Or do I just buy a brand new console. I started getting Deja vu, remembering what I went through with the
RROD on the Xbox 360. I even contemplated a console change to the PS4 but they have their issues in some form or fashion I'm sure to.

I suppose what frustrates me about this has nothing to do with warranty or extended warranty. Yes, in the grand scheme of things I should have protected myself by purchasing the extended warranty but I didn't and it's totally my fault. My belief is that
MS expected us to pay 500.00 dollars for this system (and then we have to pay for Xbox Live on top of that) which is hefty for a game console and then then the customer only gets 16 months of usage out of it and then we have to pay 115 dollars to get it repaired
or replaced with a refurbished unit. Might have been easier to swallow the cost of repair if they sweetened the deal by giving some online game store credit or hook me up on a couple free months of Xbox Live.

And yet as much as all this angered me I decided to buy a brand new system. I have all my friends, all the achievements earned over the years and prefer the Xbox platform over the PS4. I decided to do this because I do not like waiting and to avoid future
issues with the consoles repair. I ended up taking my broken console to my local Game Stop store that I frequent quite often and they gave me 125.00 trade credit for it. They also had a promotion (which I did not know about until I got there) that offered
50.00 trade credit towards anyone of the next gen consoles if your trading a console in towards it. So all said and done I had to pay 233.00 of my own money and I got a brand new console (I kept my Kinect to use on the new system). I also decided to purchase
Game Stops premium console warranty (40.00) which takes over after the manufacturers initial 1 year ends.

All I can say for MS is I really hope I can have as many trouble free years of gaming with this new system as I did after the RROD fiasco was resolved on the 360.

This used to be the xbox one general discussion forum until it changed to the xbox one console and accessories forum and all the existing threads carried over. Good community going in this section and it has continued on the same despite the name change
