    Fable 3, Windows 10 & GFWL

    Hi,

I bought Fable 3 as a PC game disk when it first came out in 2011. I installed it on my Windows 7 PC, logged in with Games for Windows Live and it all worked fine.

Cut to present day. I now have a new PC updated to Windows 10. Lionhead Studios is sadly no more and GFWL has been taken over by Xbox.

The Xbox app on Windows 10 recognises my old GFWL account login. Fable 3 is in my game list, along with the achievements I unlocked in the past, but it won't play directly from there because it was a physical CD game not a download.

When I try and install the CD it now says it can't connect to the GFWL server to verify the game. It installs fine, I just can't actually play it. I know many users are experiencing this problem. I have tried all the suggested fixes: replacing xlive.dll,
running the game from zdp.exe, changing my system clock, downloading the most recent version of GFWL client, and running in compatibility mode.

    NOTHING works!

Has anyone found a solution? Windows and Xbox help are of no help at all, and usually direct me to each other. Is this really a dead game now?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

    Thank you.

    :)

  2. Purchase History Fail preventing in-game downloads.

    Okay.

    1. Delete Local Content for Fable III (I did this thru Steam interface itself)

    2. Uninstall GFWL and Redistrubutable (did this thru Apps and Features of Windows 10)

    3. Reboot system.

    4. Reinstall Fable III (thru Steam. long wait. large download)

    5. Redownload gfwlivesetup.exe and run. (it ended up being gfwlivesetup(2).exe as I neglected to delete the previous two attempts.)

    6. Open GFWL and sign in under my .live e-mail account with all my previously earned achievements and attempt to find purchase history. (Fail)

    7. Run Fable for the first time and see no compatibility issues to combat. (Game requested I close the game to download an update to the GFWL client built into the game itself.)

    8. Closed Fable III (update goes into automatic run, forces closing of open GFWL of step 6 to continue.)

    9. Relog into Fable check the ingame download room. (Find same error as I've always had).

    10. Write up this comment.

    11. Close Fable III down as I await a reply.

= Again. Thank-you for your continued support.

GfWL login when Launching Fable 3

    Hi,

I just get a blank screen with the fable cursor when I launch Fable 3.

It does not show the GFWL login screen.

I have tried the following fixes from forums:

3# Can’t log into Game For Windows Live (GFWL) Marketplace

This issue can be due to a number of reasons. You can try following solutions to fix the problem so that you can download the DLC.

    • Try running the client as administrator
    • Uninstall GFWL and then re-install it.
    • Uninstall the kb977377 update from windows.
    • You can also try installing windows live sign in assistant to solve the issue.

    10# Fable 3 Doesn’t Start/Black Screen

The issue can be solved by re-installing/repairing GFWL from the control panel. If you haven’t tried it yet, first login Window Live Marketplace and then try running the game. If you are facing black screen on launch, then you should try changing the
resolution by switching to windowed mode first.

So I have reinstalled Fable 3, and GFWL, and removed registry information concerning both before reattempting to install.

I can obviously login to the xbox marketplace via the website.

I have tried to login here first and lauch fable, but this does not work as I seem to also have a CD Key issue:

Uh oh... that shouldn't have happened.

Client is running as Admin, do not have the kb977377 update, have use wllogin32.msi (repair)

have tried in various compatibility and windowed modes.

Please assist, I cannot find a solution.

Help for GFWL is hard to get. They don't give a *** about it anymore.

What's the exact error you're getting - you've just said that it won't let you play.

Is it hanging up at the release date verification or something else?

Thanks for your reply. You're not wrong about nobody caring any more!!

It's as soon as I choose to run the game that pesky GFWL client takes over and says "games for Windows live must verify the release date of your game please make sure your computer is connected to the Internet". Then it says "Games for Windows live cannot
    connect to the live service".

Won't let me get any further than that.

Thanks for that link - haven't seen that error before.

Are you able to open the GFWL market place client up manually? Lets see if you can do that and if it works.

    For me it's installed in:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client

    And the file is GFWLClient.exe

Even though you still can't play the game, we're making progress I think. Fable 3, Windows 10 & GFWL :) It's GFWL after all - look at it funny and it'll burn your house down. Fable 3, Windows 10 & GFWL ;) Just kidding of course.

You found the exe - great. Let's try and run it with compatibility settings. Right click on it, go to properties and compatibility - choose Windows 7. (I'm giving that path out of my memory, names may be a bit different but the process is the same).

Run it again - did it work?

If it didn't work, lets make sure you have the sign in assistant installed:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Download and install both the 32 and 64 bit versions.

    Check the log files:

    C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\GFWLive\Install\Logs\

Do any of them say that it was installed correctly?

Run the client again - did it work?

Reboot your PC. Run the client again. Did it work?

I really appreciate all your time on this Fable 3, Windows 10 & GFWL :) You're right: GFWL is out to get me!

I downloaded the sign-in assistant and can now sign in! But now I get the error message "There was an error retrieving your purchase history. Please sign out and try again later".

It doesn't really surprise me given that I have no purchase history, my game is a disk version not a download, but it still doesn't let me access the game anywhere. The app reckons I've logged into Games for Windows Marketplace, but the only options are
    "downloads" or "settings".

The log files you mentioned show that everything installed ok, but failed to connect properly. which is basically the same error as the CD install. Here's the log error message (it's long!):
