    External Storage

I recently bought an external HDD, i plugged it in, formatted it, installed fallout 4 onto it and played it for the rest of the night, it has worked fine for 3ish days until now. the xbox now only recognizes it for anywhere from 5 seconds to 10 minutes and
then i have to unplug it and plug it back in.

I have tried power cycling and the drive works fine in my PC.

    any suggestions?

    :)

Yes, the PlayStation 4 Supports External Storage, but There’s a Catch

Well now I am wondering if the X1 will let us use it to put game son it, probably not External Storage :(

I don't think that it's that bad of a catch to prevent me from using the external storage. Though I am not sure if I will ever need to actually use external storage. The fact that there will be 33 games at launch makes me think that eventually, a lot of users will need the external space. I'm OK with it not being functional for downloadable games. No biggie.

These might help you identify the problem:

    1. Power the Xbox One down completely and plug the external drive into a different USB port on the Xbox One. Power the Xbox back on and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's that particular USB port that's the issue.

    2. If the external HDD has a power cord, try plugging it into a different outlet. If it's plugged into a surge protector, try plugging it directly into a wall (temporarily, just to see if the power is the issue).

    3. Last option -- move your data on the external HDD to your internal HDD, and reformat it. I doubt this is the problem, but occasionally I've seen this work.

    @bentunit:

it works fine in my PC

    @psyact:

    1. ive tried that :/

    2. no power cable, its just a usb 3 powered slim HDD

    3. will try, i hope it works but i dont think ill be able to copy everything over since the drive only appears for a short time.

something else that might be related... idk why i didnt think of it before but it might be update related. i was on the old dash when it was working.

re formatting worked at first, however i started to copy more games onto it, instead of just moving them so i dont loose them this time. i let them copy throughout the night, according to the system messages, the drive kept disconnecting more and more frequently
as more stuff was put on it, something that is new though is that it must have been re connecting by its self cause the copying would resume and stop. i formatted it in my PC and copied all the contents of my other external drive (around 600ish GB) to it and
it worked just fine so i know its not the drive.

if this is an issue with the latest dashboard, i at least have all my frequently played games on my internal drive now so thats good External Storage :)

    Hi there,

As far as I know this isn't a issue with the latest update, I haven't been experiencing any issue like this, but since there are a lot of different make and models.

Since it could still be the hard drive in combination with the console, I do advise to see if there is an option to try your external hard drive on a different Xbox One to see if it does the same thing on that console.

You could also try a different hard drive on your console to see how that works.

This is to determine if this is caused by your hard drive or the console.

Also what is the make and model of the external hard drive to have others in here verifiy.

    the hard drive is a

    WD Blue SSHD 1TB 2.5' SATA 6 Gb/s 5400 rpm 8 GB NAND (WD10J31X-00U3VT0)

im wondering if its cause its a solid state hybrid, i suppose i can swap externals, the other one is not a hybrid. but i could have sworn i read that the xbox supports hybrid drives

i dont have another xbox i can try it in :/

That might very well be the issue. The console supports USB 3.0 external drives, not internal SATA. Please try getting a drive that is USB 3.0 compatible and you should experience no more issues.

Most USB 3 external drives that i have seen have a standard SATA connection that plugs into an adapter External Storage :p, i just used an adapter. I'm using my laptops 750 GB seagate SSHD now and put it in my external HDD's little enclosure and it seems to be working fine.
it must have just been that drive o_o

but it did not go to waste cause im using it inside my laptop now as my master drive External Storage :p

if this doesnt work then i guess ill have to go out and buy different external drive :/

Xbox one games crashing upon launch

    Hi there,

just to be sure, are the games installed on the internal storage device or an external storage device?

If they are installed on an external storage device, please try and see what happens if the game is installed on the internal storage device and the external storage device is disconnected.

If I might make a suggestion on a particular brand, go for a Toshiba brand external 7200 RPM HDD, I have two 1TB Toshiba external HDD's and they have never let me down. I know at my local Walmart they have the 1TB for $49.99 a piece and they have the 2TB
for $69.99 a piece, so be sure to check them out if you can afford the right one you want.

    Hello Tamer,

I currently am using a WD MyPassport Ultra 3TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I picked up awhile back for around $80.00 on sale.

I havent had any issues with it so far, I have it set to default so everything is loaded to it, so I can always take my games to go if needed.

If you have any one your looking at in particular, make sure it is capable of higher Rpms in order to read/write data quicker. Make sure to get one that is USB 3.0 (some companies still try to sell the 2.0 versions). I prefer ext. drives that use the power
through USB from the xbox versus having to plug it in to a seperate outlet.

Also space is very imporant, as for example, lets say each game you download or install is roughly 40GB. So that means 1 TB drive will provide you enough space for approx. 25 Games. Which is why I went for the 3TB version.

Had a similar problem last year. I returned it to the retailer and got a new one. I followed the formatting instructions and it worked.
