External Storage keeps disconnecting

I have an external hard drive I recently formatted for extra game storage. The issue is, it keeps disconnecting. I keep the drive plugged in, but every time I turn the console on, the drive doesn't appear. However, if I unplug it, and plug it back in,
it shows up.

Other than that, I'm trying to move games over to the other drive, and the games queue up to transfer, but after a few moments, the drive disappears and the transfer fails.

Is there some kind of setting I need to change to keep power going to the drive or something? It's a USB 3.0 enclosure, so I'm not sure the drive's the issue.

Xbox One and External Hard Drive (HDD) Install Issues

Hi there,

if this keeps happening to the external storage device I would start to think that the external storage device might be having some (hardware) issues and could stop working at all any time soon.

I personally would get a different external storage device to see what happens when using that one.

Hi Ive recently purchased a 1TB external hd 3.0 and when it is plugged in I get a message on the screen saying external storage ready, then when im installing a game to the external hard drive it keeps saying installation stopped then it comes back
up with external storage ready again this happens every 40 seconds or so

 

Try this it has helped some. Completely the external HDD from the console. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power
cord back in and restart the console (DO NOT connect the external drive yet). Once it is back up and operational connect the external HDD and test for results. Let us know. Good Luck!

 

I tried it. My drive disappears and any installations or moving files stop.

 

Anyone else have help on this? I've used every USB port on the console, and my drive meets all of the specifications.

 

Are you currently in the preview program?

 

Does the drive enclosure pull power from the USB Bus or does it have its own power source? Do you have a friend or a relative that has an XBOX One that you could test the drive on in an attempt to narrow down the issue?

 

It pulls power from the USB Bus, which I have a feeling might be the issue.

I don't know anyone else with an Xbox One, unfortunately.

 

My external uses its own power source and I don't have any issues but it is a drive designed as an external. However, I would guess that most are using drives that pull the power from the bus.

You could try an enclosure that pulls power from its own power source.

 

Maybe I'll have to try that. It's a really large drive, so I'd hate for it to go to waste with just documents and stuff for my computer.

I found the product page for the enclosure and I don't see anything in the specifications that should keep it from working with Xbox One. It has well over 256gb of space, and is USB 3.0. The first time I plugged it in, I was able to move a game over, but
every time since, it just disconnects after 2 minutes.

Do you have any other USB devices connected to the console.? If so remove them and then try your external drive. According to the specs your device should work but there is obviously something that is not quite right. Hopefully, you can get it resolved

I also have had this issue. I have a my book from western digital. My drive was working fine until 2 months ago. Chatted with MS for a good hour. Did hard shutdowns, tried the side USB port and it wasn't recognizing any external storage at all. Usb memory
sticks and other external drives. NADA, nothing. They were absolutely zero help. Moved only the important games I like onto the internal drive. I can't understand why MS can't and won't fix these problems. I've been gaming with MS since day one. Its just a
shame that a great company can't get the hardware issues solved so we can enjoy our investment.

 

Jester, unfortunately, there are so many different configurations available it is almost impossible to address them all at one time and it sometimes has to be worked on on a case by case basis. It is easy to arm chair quarterback and say they should do
this or they should do that when in reality it just isn't that easy.

You can be assured they are aware of the issues and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible. You can bet that the frustrations that an individual user feels is multiplied many times for Microsoft. I speak from experience as the previous VP of
Technology Services for a financial institution. When we upgraded our systems there were always a small percentage that would have issues that we would have to work through and that always brought a huge amount of frustration to myself and my staff but being
the professionals they were they worked diligently to resolve them until the next round of upgrades would create a whole new group of issues.

It appears that you have been extremely patient and hopefully the next major update will resolve your issue.

Actually, now that you mentioned updates, that got me thinking. I can't recall exactly when the drive worked before and when it stopped working, but maybe the NXOE update is what's causing it. The Preview Program got a new update in late January that hasn't
gone public yet, right? Maybe that'll fix it.

It just sucks because I've got two HUGE games (The Master Chief Collection and Rock Band 4 + DLC) taking up most of my hard drive space, and I'd love to move them to that drive.
