    External Storage Compatibility / Performance

Hello, all. I know that an Xbox One external hard drive must be USB 3 and at least 256 GB, but is there a list of external HDD's supported by Xbox One or does any USB 3 / 256 GB drive work? Which drive does everyone recommend? Thanks!

    :)

What are your top 3 favorite features of the Xbox One?

    1. External drive support. I love having 4TB of storage.

    2. The instant on game resume feature is awesome.

    3. Backwards compatibility with 360 games.

    Need help

    Jackie,

You really need an external hard drive. The minimum requirement for external storage is:

    -Must be a USB 3

    -must be larger the 256GB

You can use a memory stick but the external hard drives will probably be cheaper for more storage and better performance. I've used memory sticks mostly to transfer for capture game clips for video. For basic info: an Xbox One console can use upto 3
external storage device (HardDrives) upto 8TB each.

    Hope this helps

There isn't a list because any USB external hard drive with at least 256GB free will work with the console. However, there are drive manufactures out there that are well known for being the best. These
    are:

    Western Digital

    Seagate

    Samsung

    Toshiba

    Sony

  5. I use a WD My Passport Ultra 2gb. A "portable" drive has the advantage of being powered by the USB connection itself, instead of a desktop style drive that needs to be plugged into a power outlet of it's own. I transferred all currently installed content
to the portable, and now install all new content directly to it. It definitely makes a difference in game booting and loading.

Check out the xbox one media hub from collective minds. I got mine from future shop (Best BUY).

It plugs into the left side of the xbox one usb port and has the exact same contour as the xbox one so you dont even really notice you added anything on the side. It even adds three extra usb ports to the front of the box one.

Now keep in mind with this media hub you still need to buy the hard drive. It accepts an internal laptop hard drive, 2.5". So you can buy anything from 256gb up to a 4TB hard drive and use it. the hard drive plugs into the back of the media hub before
installing it on the xbox and once its done you will have another permanent storage place.

    I hope this help.

P.S. Just google collective minds media hub xbox one. there are alot of reviews and there are a couple for sale on ebay. as well.

I was using an USB 3 WD My Passport 2.5" HDD, this drive is a good little Disk drive and reliable, how ever after owning around 1 year and I was starting to worry about how hot the WD drive was getting.

so I decided to upgrade to an USB 3 Hard Drive enclosure, in which I have Installed an full size 3.5" 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm Hard Drive, I just feel a full size 3.5" PC Hard Disk Drive is better suited for long term use and faster 7200rpm will be
faster seek times as well as running a lot cooler etc.

If I am honest the speed difference between the WD my passport and my Seagate Barracuda I don't notice but the Seagate drive Runs a lot cooler, which is always a good thing for long term use.

  9. I can't recommend a brand but I suggest using a portable external drive and use system setting to turn it off at shutdown. This is a link to my Twitter post concerning issues I have had with using a desktop internal hard drive in a powered external drive
enclosure with my XBox One. You may find this information useful. I uninstalled the entire Forza 6 Ultimate Bundle with all DLC and reinstalled it to my internal drive. I also moved my other Forza games back to the internal drive.

hmm I wonder if its because the xbox needs an portable usb powered drive if your using the xbox in instant on mode? I have had no issues as of yet although I will keep this in mind but I don't use auto updates and keep system in power saver mode so not
    sure if that helps?.

    Hey there ATSooGamer,

WD My Passport is a good portable drive that works just fine with the console. Besides that I could also suggest checking out WD Elements Portable as a more inexpensive option and WD My Passport X which is designed specifically for Xbox users:

    WD Elements Portable:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

    WD My Passport X:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

For desktop external drives with larger capacities you can check out WD Elements Desktop and WD My Book. Both of the should also work just fine and give you more space for your games and media. The difference would be that they have separate power sources
and are not powered by the USB port:

    WD Elements Desktop:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

    WD My Book:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

Pretty much any USB drive should work on your console.

Feel free to ask if you happen to have questions External Storage Compatibility / Performance :)
