External HDD won't powered down on Xbox one

    Hi,

sorry about this as I know this thread been done before but I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything reading many pages on the forum and as the subject suggest I'm having issues with this drive Staying on.

I purchased a 2TB Toshiba HDD with a wall plug powered Icy enclosure and have plugged into the rear of the XB1.

Ive uncheck the box in settings that should turn the HDD off when console is switched off and I've also tried using instant on and power saving mode but still after several hours the HHD is still spinning, even quit any games that I've played just
in case that was keeping it on and tried all 3 USB ports.

I had a usb powered WD ultra in the past and that seem to power down, so why won't this drive?

I don't hear any clicking noises so its not read/writing just spinning, just don't like the idea of it being on 24/7 using electricity and making that spinning noise, would it shorten the drives life span in the end?

Thanks and sorry again if this thread been done to death,

    :)

Please recommend a good 3.0 USB hard drive

I personally use, and recommend an USB 3.0 Seagate 2TB Expansion HDD for Xbox One, as external drive is powered by mains plug pack.

Laptop External HDDs powered by USB port, are thinner; but, are also slower than Desktop HDDs used in mains powered external drives.

People recommend Western Digital (WD) external HDDs: But, they tend to use Green drives that don't perform well, and tend to fail sooner etc.

'Saved state' function of previously played game not working

    Hey there nickillaz.

Are you able to confirm if the games that you are currently experiencing this issue with are installed on your external storage device? It's possible your HDD isn't being powered while the Xbox One is powered down, leading to the game closing.

External HDD won't powered down on Xbox one

    Hi Jameste3,

The one that is plugged into the wall is getting power from the wall, and not the Xbox. I would imagine this is why it's staying on and the other one is turning off. That said, if you want to see 100% if this is the case you could plug the drive into a computer, and
then turn the computer off. If it stays powered on you know that being plugged into the wall is the reason

    Hope this helps!

  6. Being mains powered or usb powered makes no difference if you have it set to power off when you close your console down, mine is a Seagate 2tb usb 3.0 and mains powered and as no problems powering down.

    Thanks growlingyapper.

Wonder why won't power down then.

Im just thinking could the hard drive enclosure have something to do with it or the hard drive it self.

Have you tried contacting Toshiba as some HDDs could require a firmware update.

Also this is quite a common problem with some makes and types.

Xbox just keeps spinning the external HDDs when in Quick start mode.

There is an option in the settings, can't remember where to get the xbox to power down an external HDD when the console is of. I think it only works with HDD that don't have an external power supply.

If it is on with one with external power supply then I would say something is wrong as mine doesn't spin up while the Xbox is off unless it's downloading an update for a game.

    External Storage

These might help you identify the problem:

    1. Power the Xbox One down completely and plug the external drive into a different USB port on the Xbox One. Power the Xbox back on and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's that particular USB port that's the issue.

    2. If the external HDD has a power cord, try plugging it into a different outlet. If it's plugged into a surge protector, try plugging it directly into a wall (temporarily, just to see if the power is the issue).

    3. Last option -- move your data on the external HDD to your internal HDD, and reformat it. I doubt this is the problem, but occasionally I've seen this work.

    Complex External Hard Drive Issue

Try this it has worked for some with external HDD issues. Disconnect the External HDD. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug
the power cord back in and restart the console (DO NOT connect the External HDD). Once it is back up and operational then connect the External HDD and test for results. Good Luck!

XBOX One X wakes up external harddrive all the time

Either an external HDD always disconnects when you shut down Xbox. A, or in the power mode setting, shut down the storage.

NEW 1TB EXTERNAL.HARD DRIVE NOT WORKING

Please provide the above information. However, this has helped some with external HDD issues.

Disconnect the external HDD from the console. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console
(DO NOT connect the external HDD Yet). Once it is back up and operational connect the external HDD and test for results. Did the XBOX recognize the drive? Let us know. Good Luck!
