External HDD stucks during download in instant on mode

I have an external HDD connected and I have a problem when something is downloading while console is off in instant on mode - for example I have a game X on External HDD, and update is downloading and I turn off console during download. So I see that console
is off and HDD is working - after few hours I turn console on and there is no progress in downloading and external drive is frozen - I need to unplug it and plug it back to be working / downloading again.

There is no issue with contect stored on internal HDD - everything is working fine.

Anyone know what can be wrong and how to solve this problem?

Game downloads freeze, Xbox One X gets stuck

Just to avoid unnecessary troubleshooting steps, I have an external HDD, but game updates for those on the external HD work fine. Downloads get stuck only when it comes to what is installed or being installed on the internal HDD. I also tried with the external
HDD unplugged, same result.

Instant on mode. Downloads either stop or very slow when console is off

That's actually not true that Instant-On downloads are always slow. I'm downloading most of my content while in Instant-On and it takes just couple of hours to fully download big games.

That being said, I encountered the same issue that MrBungle06 is talking about after I purchased external HDD and set it as default. In Instant-On it barely downloads anything and I have no idea why.

Can I ask you, what external HDD are you exactly using? Myself, I'm using HGST Touro S 1TB 7200RPM. It works perfectly when I play games installed on it, and also speeds of transferring data between internal and external drives seem fine, and installing
games from discs or downloading while the console is fully powered on is nice and smooth, it's just messed up when it goes into Instant-On.

I can tell the HDD is spinning while in Instant-On, but maybe, I don't know, it's getting less power or something?

 

I don't know for sure that this will help, but with most issues, fully powering down your console (go into Settings, Power, Turn Xbox off) and unplugging the power cord from the back for 5 minutes will help. I would start with that.

Also, are you part of the preview program?

 

Already tried - doesn't help.

Yes - I am in preview program but this problem was also at the time when I wasn't - I don't think it's related to new system.

 

Next, I would try:

Make sure the console is plugged directly into the wall, not a surge protector. It may be a power issue.

Try a different USB port on your console. It may be an issue with the port.

Try a different USB cable. I think that this is the least likely to help, but I would cover all bases.

Try a different external hard drive. This is probably unrealistic, but if you're able to borrow a friend's, give it a go.

I would try those one at a time to help narrow down what is causing your issue. If none of them help, my next step would be to try a factory reset of the console, in case it is an OS issue, but I would guess that it is caused by something else.

Again, I don't know for sure that any of that will help, but those are the steps I would take if it were my console.
