External HDD spins and stops repeatedly

Yesterday I connected my 3TB WD My Book Essential to my XBox One S and transferred all games to it. It works perfectly when I play games! Unfortunately when I turn off the console the external drive constantly spins and turns off approximately every 20
seconds or so. The console is off so why does the external drive even start to spin? Prior to connecting this drive to the console it was connected to NAS. It was working very well and the health status is OK also. I checked it and there are no bad sectors
    or anything like that.

    :)

It sounds like it's just powering down. Sometimes electronics need a bit before they completely shut off.

You can turn off the external HDDs when the console is off by going to settings>power & startup>power & startup mode and stopping the HDD drive staying on when console is off.

If your console is in instant on and set to keep all games and apps up to date this means that the HDD will power up/stay on to download whilst off.

Remote Purchases, Ready to Install when i boot up.

Yes that seems like a possibility, i will try it and post what the results are.

On a side note, every time i turn my xbox one off, the external hdd spins down aswell. But then after a few seconds, the external disk spins up again. Only to spin down, and as soon as it has done that, it spins back up again. And so on so on like 8-12 times
before it finally spins down and stays in that state.

Also i have noticed that the external hdd spins up at random times, when the XBO is turned off. So i have assumed that the XBO did have control over it, even when in low power mode.

Especially since my external hdd uses its own power supply (which rules out not enough power from the XBO in low power mode to run it.)

But as mentioned above, i will try it and post the results :)

    External HDD repeatedly being detected

Hi, I would check the power mode setting

Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select All settings.

    Select Power.

    Go to Power mode.

Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage”

Then press and hold the power button on the Xbox for 10 seconds and the Xbox powers off, power on again using the power button on the Xbox.

You're welcome, it's nice to see manners in action for a change, a thank you costs nothing but means a lot.
