External HDD recognised as media device only?

    I have a
    Samsung M3 500GB USB 3.0 portable HDD
and have formatted it on a Mac to be MS-DOS (FAT). There doesn't seem to be any partition on it, I've deleted the hidden files also (except one called Trash which cannot be deleted), but when I try to use it in my Xbox
    One it reads as follows:

    *music symbol*

    External

465.4 GB free of 465.7 GB

    Pictures, music & video

When I select it there's no option to format, only 'View contents' which then takes me to the media app. It definitely fits the requirements of USB 3.0 and over 256 GB, and other people seem to be having no problems with it's 1TB and 2TB siblings. I'm pretty
new to external HDD and formatting in general so apologies if this is an easy fix!

    :)

    Media HDD not recognised

I have plugged my 320gb usb2 hdd into my xbox one and the xbox refuses to recognise it.

I have tried it when formatted with ntfs, fat32 and expat and still nothing.

Flash drives work just fine, though Android devices with msc mode on and this hdd do not seem to be recognised at all as media drives.

I am not trying to use either as usb3 external storage for games, just for media.

Any idea why msc and this hdd do not work?

External HDD recognised as media device only?

Hey there RoastPotato3 lets try troubleshooting it and make sure the requirements are in fact correct.

    • It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    • It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.
    • It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Please also note the Xbox one uses NTFS not FAT32 and the console cannot read the contents when the drive(s) is/are formatted to FAT32.

Xbox One media player won't recognise my Hard Drive.

I'm having a similar issue, except the 2 HDD's that I use to watch movies through the media app have been recognised and have worked fine for over a year. All of a sudden neither are recognised by the app. The HDD's work fine through TV's PC's etc. just
    not on my Xbone.

When I insert one of the drives, I get a notification that an external device is ready hold home button to launch. But when I enter the media app nothing is listed.

Nothing has changed on my HDD and I've had no updates for the Xbone. That I know of anyway.

    Any help would be appreciated

Media Player difficulty! Media Player doesn't recognise external hard drive, can anyone help?

If your external HDD is partitioned for use as X1 storage, I'm fairly certain Media Player won't recognise it as a media storage device, and so won't be checking it for audio/video/image files. It'll basically be an extension of X1 storage.

The Media Player isn't all that great. I don't think it's even complete software. It does have 'preview' in the title still. lol I can only get the X1/Media Player to detect my tablet, phone, and laptop by using Universal Media Server, a free piece of software
that let's you organise what files can and can't be shared/streamed across devices.

If you Google you should find a free download. But that would mean you'd have to plug your external HDD into something other than your One, and have UMS set up to find it and make streaming content to the X1's Media Player a thing. =|

    external usb hard drive question

It doesn't recognise the External HDDs full capacity though, does it, c0deater..?? The Xbox 360, will only recognise "One" 16GB partition on any external HDD..

It is only 16GB, as the UEFI System Kernel, is not designed, for a USB Drive to handle any more than 16GB without the dashboard crashing..

Media Player not recognising External HDD

Thanks for that SoAnnoying. There is a reddit post on the Xbox One page from a dev asking about external hard drives and stuff. I wrote a wall of text and tagged him in it in hopes that maybe he can do something or pass the info along to someone who can.
This past two months have been hard though, we've had to limit are spending because we don't have the hard drive space to download any new games. I don't see why this isn't a issue for xbox, even if it is a small group (which it doesn't seem to be anymore),
they just want to ignore us.
