    External HDD preview update

I've updated my console, but Xbox One gives error when I connect my external HDD. The error 0x80820005 is "Try a different device." My HDD meets all the requirements but still gives this error, it has USB 3.0 and 2TB. I don't know what I can do. My HDD model
    is Expansion Desktop STBV2000100.

    :)

  5. I will ask you this since you are the first I've seen hook up an external drive. Does it have to be formatted for the 1? In other words, it's not plug and play so I can show vids and pics and movies huh? Like I can on my PS3. This IS THE deciding factor
if I get one or not. Portability for my WD My Passport 1TB is very important as I think we may be the only family in the united states that lives in three separate states. But hey, I could be wrong...

  6. Yes it has to be formatted for the 1. Here is my problem through. did the update and formatted the HDD(WD My Passport 2Tb USB 3.0) work just fine for two minutes then disconnected. It does this over and over. Sometimes I don't have to plug it back in it
just reconnects on its own. Talk to support no help. Any ideas?

  7. IF you had a similar problem to the one I just posted. I changed the USB 3.0 cable with another one. It works better not perfect but I can at lest move data around.

    External HDD preview update

I got the 0x80820005 error with the Seagate Expansion 4TB as well. I have rebooted my Xbox One multiple times. I have unplugged and replugged the USB 3.0 cable into one USB port, and then the other.

Originally, I was receiving that error code with the accompanying message. Now there is no response from the Xbox One at all. The light comes on and I hear the disc spinning in my external HDD. When I tried plugging it into my laptop instead, my laptop initially
recognized it and now doesn't. Is it possible that the Xbox One is reformatting the external HDD without telling me?

Nevermind. I just kept repeating everyting (rebooting, unplugging, replugging, rebooting) until it finally worked. As long as it continues to work, I don't care what the problem was.

Just had this problem with my new Seagate Expansion drive, problem turned out to be the USB 3.0 cable included with the drive, it was not connecting at USB 3.0 speeds, triggering the error message you are seeing. Purchase a high quality USB 3.0 A to micro-b
cable online or from a computer store, may not solve the issue for everyone but it's not a very expensive step to try if no other suggestion is working.

Xbox had system update last night now it's not recognizing external hard drive

What are you using the external HDD for (Games & Apps or External Captures)? Are you in the Dashboard Preview program?

If External Captures and yes to Dashboard Preview then please use the report feature of the Xbox Insider app to let them know about your issue. My console is in Preview Alpha and I noticed that the last update seems to have affected how it sees my External
    Capture HDD.

If your console isn't in Dashboard Preview then try connecting your HDD to a computer to see if it's recognized there. It may be a coincidence however unfortunately HDD'S do die eventually.
