External HDD not showing on Xbox One but does seem to be working ok on PC

I have an external HDD for my Xbox One (WD Passport 2TB). It has worked fine for about 18 months but now not accessible on Xbox. It has nearly all my games stored on which I can no longer access and so am limited to the few games I've got loaded onto the main hard drive.

The external HDD no longer shows in the 'Storage Devices' section of the settings and the games are just not there on the games list.

I've bought a new USB cable which didn't solve the issue.

I've plugged the HDD into my PC. The drive does show up in Device Manager and is an option within Disk Management (though its asking me to initialise it, which i think would wipe the contents). But it does not show up in My PC.

There is no excessive whiring sound from the drive and no clicks, the light comes on and can feel the disk spininng but jsut as normal

Anyone know how to fix this?

The troubleshoot didnt work so guess I'll have a go at reformatting.

Hi,

This is quite normal. As the drive uses a different format to Windows NTFS it will only show in Disk Management. If you choose to initialise the drive, this will wipe the contents.

Occasionally (and somewhat rarely), hard drives connected to Xbox can be corrupted and will no longer show as connected to the console. If the above linked troubleshoot doesn't work then your only recourse would be to format the drive in Windows and then format it again for Xbox Storage.

Unfortunately this will clear the contents of the drive and you will need to download/install your games again.

If the the drive sounds like it's doing normal whirring and does not make any clicking sounds (HDD click of death) then it should still be fine to use.

Does the external disc show as a hard drive in the disc management program? Of so then try right mouse button to see if it showed a format option. Be sure to do this on the external hdd

When in doubt ask someone that knows how to do it to watch with you. Showing the steps might not work since every situation can be different due to difference in setup for a PC

Does any seagate external hdd work because I’m not paying nearly 400$ for the one specifically for series I’d just buy a pc at that point and get just as much
