  1. External HDD not recognised on startup (intermittently)

    Hi

I currently use the "WD My Passport Ultra 2TB USB 3.0 Portable Drive" with my Xbox One. Generally I have no issues using the device i.e. I'm able to download/play games with no problems or error messages. However, occasionally I'll start the console
and the external storage device isn't available/visible.

To workaround this I need to disconnect/reconnect the cable and I get the "External storage ready" notification. It'll be fine for a while after this, then eventually it will do the same thing again.

I have my console configured to use "Instant-on" mode. OS version is currently 6.2.11797.0 (xb_rel_1411.141124-1759) fre.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of intermittent issue with an external storage device?

Thanks in advance External HDD not recognised on startup (intermittently) :)

    :)

  2. Xbox one latest update with external hdd problem

Hi, check in settings>power & startup>power mode & startup and see if the box for external HDDs is checked or not.

External hdd recognised but not accessible

Today i received the most recent update for the beta preview programme, 10.0.17134.3036 and since the update I am unable to access my Toshiba 2TB HDD.

it appears the Xbox is recognising the HDD, but claims it is 100% full, but no games or apps are showing as being installed. The HDD should show as being approx 75% full.

I have attempted to fully boot the xbox twice, log out of my profile, fully remove power to the box, and even attempted to reformat the HDD via the storage settings. Reformatting does not complete, and it doesn't look like it's even attempting to complete.
I have not reset my Xbox yet.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is it a coincidence that the HDD stops functioning after OS update?

    Model: Xbox One (original)

    OS: 10.0.17134.3036 (rs4_release_xbox_dev_1805.180510-1632)

    HDD: Toshiba DTB320 2TB

Can you try power cycling your console by holding the power button on it for 10 seconds until it shuts down to see if that resolves the issue?

  5. Hi onyx62is

Thanks for the idea/tip. Unfortunately power cycling only provides another temporary solution (similar to the disconnect/reconnect workaround). I can be sure of this because I had to power cycle my console a couple of days ago and the issue has recurred
    since then.

  6. I have the same problem....Contacted Microsoft Support....They said it needed repair. The xbox one is brand new so I returned it and am getting another one today. Will post back results.

My question: Does the Xbox one require a HDD usb powered or powersupply powered?

I am wondering if this has any effect. I don't see why it would but never read anymore specs other tha USB 3.0 for games and USB 2.0 for media and music. Which I did verify by plugging two different kinds in.

The only luck we had with dropping out was plugging it in on the side. It runs longer but still drops less.

This is odd. I have a passport external 1TB drive myself with no issues. If you are experiencing disconnects with the drive and have to disconnect the USB cable then perhaps try purchasing a new cable to see if that helps.

If that fails to work you could try reformatting the drive on your pc.

Other than that the only thing I can suggest is that, if it continues, there may be an issue with either the console or the drive.

HellRazor - it doesn't matter if the drive is powered by the console or not.

I use the exact same external HDD 2.0TB, I have mine defaulted as the drive to install to thru Settings > System and haven't run into an issue yet.. also in Instant on mode. I usually reboot it once every couple days and its been good. I allowed the system
to format it when I initially plugged it in.

  9. Thanks for all the replies. Interesting to hear a mix of different experiences with similar devices.

HellRazorRulez - would be interested to hear if you get feedback from MS about what the problem potentially was and if I should be considering a repair.

I actually just did a fresh boot of the console this morning as I had it unplugged (fully powered off) whilst I was moving some cables around. Just checked the "manage storage" menu and there was no external storage available. Had to disconnect/reconnect
    again :S

I'll try replacing the HDD cable and see if that helps any.

  10. Onyx62is....Thanks for the reply. Didn't think it mattered. On power options when is says power down storage. That is not possible unless its usb powered. So thats where my thoughts were.

GingerRossy......I did receive my third Xboxone yesterday. We set it up with no issues and plugged the HDD in the back USB port and have no issues as of now. It has detected it from the start and no intermittent issues. Its only been two days but my fingers
    are crossed.

If it doesn't fail after a week.....I'll repost. 3 Consoles since Christmas. Amazon is great to deal with....I give them A+ for returns.

Mine does this sometimes as well.

I think it's the same HDD as mentioned by the OP.

I use energy saving mode and when this happens my console takes about 2 minutes to switch on. I then have to unplug the HDD and plug back in to get it recognised
