External hdd keeps disconnecting. Then says ready to use

Still having this issue which xbox have done nothing about. Ill be happily playing a game off the external hdd and then it'll reload the start screen and say drive now ready to use.. great.

Tried everything that been suggested.

Is the xbox so poorly engineered that it cannot power a hdd?

Hi Ive recently purchased a 1TB external hd 3.0 and when it is plugged in I get a message on the screen saying external storage ready, then when im installing a game to the external hard drive it keeps saying installation stopped then it comes back
up with external storage ready again this happens every 40 seconds or so

Hey there Barratt1988.

If you haven't already please give another USB port on your console a try. If you're still having trouble with other USB ports do you have a different external drive you can test? Just trying to narrow this issue down the best we can

Yes External HDD support is available. The External HDD must be at least 256GB in size and use USB 3.0. Keep in mind that the External HDD will have to be formatted for use with the Xbox One console.

I thank you so much for a quick response. I think the best way if i am going to make a backup of my Owned Digital Games is Re-download them from Microsoft Store into a New Empty USB HDD. Because when i tried turning on my Series X and disconnected the external USB HDD prior, the games that are supposed to be in my External USB HDD are now under ready to install

Allright, seems like we have a similar issue if not the exact same one.

My games dont get the message "installation stopped", but just moves to the "ready to install" pane.

I will try what both of you suggest, to keep the external drive always on, to see if it solves something.

And i agree that i also think something does not work as intended. I would expect that i could use the instant on power mode together with an external hdd, and that the external hdd would act like the XBO's internal. With that i mean that the XBO should
be able to put the external hdd in and out of sleep if it need to use it, when it is turned off in instant on mode.

Extra sets of AA batteries and a charger to keep them ready.

External HDD isn't necessary until you start to fill up the internal HDD. I prefer an external SSD, but if that's too pricey a decent 1TB or 2TB USB powered external HDD would be fine.

A tablet to run SmartGlass can be useful.

A spare controller in case one controller starts to drift.
