Interesting discussion as I am in the market for a 2TB External for my 360 Console before, or soon after Microsoft releases a Update allowing full external support.

Arkham: I agree. The X1 should have had no less than a TB Internal Drive STANDARD. However, from what I am finding out is, that even a none vented HDD has the ability to continually transfer data streams just as long as the operating temp is kept within
    limits.

    I also found this..

    www.extremetech.com/.../198154-2014-hard-drive-failure-rates-point-to-clear-winners-and-losers-but-is-the-data-good

So from my research I'll be looking for a Tosh in a fully vented, externally powered, fan cooled enclosure.

I also read your link to the other thread about External HDD's and it seems to back the above link. So thanks OP for making this thread, and I hope you get your EHDD problems worked out soon.

I have a WD Passport 2TB, self powered, works like a charm, only slightly warm under heavy gaming sessions and no issues what so ever here, been using this since June.

  3. Is it only with Seagate drives? Or has this error been reported with other brands.?

Sometimes these drives are intended to be "cloud" file storage systems and are not good for continuous duty such as playing games or streaming video from.

I might agree with Ark on this The Externals are meant for storage only and not direct use. At least for gaming. They are not set up for the stress and heat given off by the use of playing games. Sure you can get away with it for a while but eventually something
    will go wrong.

I do not need an external yet but what is the transfer speed? meaning if you are in setting and want to switch from External to Internal on a 50gb game, how long does it take?

I run all 40 of my games off my 3tb seagate hard drive and I have two (one for each Xbox) and have not had one problem. I've been using them since the day they supported them

i've been running all my games and apps off of a
    3TB Buffalo DriveStation
for about 6 months now with no issues, plus it has a 3 year warranty.

OP, have you done anything with the drive itself? like hook it up to a computer and run the manufactures diagnostics, or maybe format the drive?

I have been running all of my Xbox One games from my 5TB Seagate Back Up Plus. I have had it since the update released supporting external hard drive support. Works like a charm. I have never had any issues with it at all.

No troubles with mine. I leave most games I play a lot on the internal and only just ran AC4 black flag this morning off the external. I haven't played it for a good 6 months I think and it loaded and played fine. Running games for a few hours at a time
from an external USB powered drive should have little to no effect on the drives lifespan. Maybe running it in an extremely hot environment for 12 hours might but general gaming no. 6 months ? Lol give me s break guys.

And the arguments about the speed of the external devices is also "not relevant" for it's not the speed that's the problem, it's about the stress being put on a device that wasn't designed to run games for extended periods of time and will break down after
lengthy use. The "12 Million" number is considerably smaller in reality, but that's OK because most equate Consoles Shipped to Consoles Sold to boost the numbers. I'm sure if I looked harder I could find many more instances of XBOX users having difficulties
with External Storage but spamming is against the forum ToU. I don't have the time but there's very likely "thousands of complaints", I only provided one small slice from these forums, one that is 5 pages long and covers an extended period of time.

The OP even remarked on finding "a lot of users have same problems with external hdd" and has likely spent considerably more time searching for answers than you or I have. If an External HDD is your Primary HD for Gaming then it's only a matter of time
that the unnecessary stress on the device will cause it to fail long before it would've had it been used for what it was designed, and that's for storage not gaming. Even if your "12 Million" stat was accurate, you assume that all "12 Million" are using an
External HDD for extended hours of gaming, or that none of them understand the function of an External HDD and don't use it accordingly...:)
