External HDD detection

Been using an external 1 TB for over a year now and never had a problem until tonight. My Xbox won't connect to the internet or controllers if I turn the Xbox on with it plugged in. Five to ten seconds after I unplug it, it connects to the internet and my
controller. Once I plug it back in, the Xbox doesn't even acknowledge that it exists.

I don't have the time or the hard drive space to reinstall all my games, updates, and add-ons. Yes, I have done the hard reset, yes, my Xbox is fully updated, and yes, I have tried it in every USB port on the Xbox. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can I use an external hard drive for two Xbox One's?

I have an external hard drive which i use for my main xbox, but I put it into my other xbox one and it get's detected and it shows my games in the games list, but on the left hand side, it only shows the % for the original 500gb, not 7.5% which is what it should be. I've even selected the external HDD on the storage menu. Any help? Customer Support on Microsoft isn't doing much unfortunately.
