External Hard Drive

So yesterday I purchased a portable 2 TB external hard drive for my one. It's working perfectly but I was wondering if I am able to unplug it from the One without corruption or having to reformat or does it have to stay plugged in. I just want to know if
I can give it a rest because I noticed even when the console is on Energy Saving mode shut down, the light is still blinking on the external drive and it irritates me a little bit when watching movies and such.

I make the assumption that it can be disconnected as long as it's not in operation but I want clarification before I remove it because I didn't test it before moving ESO and GTA over which amount to almost 100 GB of data and would prefer not to have to do
that again.

I tried to google the answer already and couldn't find diddly on it. Any information on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

if adverts for "compatible" external hard drives are any indication it would seem the external storage patch should be coming some time soon although I note it wont be in the first patch released.

You can absolutely remove the hard drive from the Xbox. Make sure it's off when you disconnect it, and you shouldn't have any issues with it. Honestly one of my kids yanked mine out mid game play, but I seriously wouldn't recommend that. When the Xbox is
sleeping (instant on mode), there could be some IO but it would be so small especially being a secondary drive, and not primary. With energy saving mode no IO is possible.
