External Hard Drive/Xbox issue. Scratching my head.

Hello, lets see if someons can figure this one out.

I have a 3tb external HD I've had for a couple of months. It was formatted on the Xbox and worked awesome until the past week. Actually, it still does work. The problem is the Xbox doesn't say external storage ready anymore upon boot so it doesn't show the
xrive or the games that are on it. The funny thing is I can still install games and play them but they have to be pinned to the home screen. If I install a game I have to go to the game hub and pin the game to home in order for it to load.

All the games show as ready to install even thought they're already on the HD I just have to go to the games hub an pin them to the home screen to play them.

????? I think it first happened when one of the kids tried to load goat simulator before the xbox said the hard drive was ready. The game started to load then shut down and went back to the home.

So I can still download to the HD and play from the HD but the xbox never says it's ready.

    :)

External Hard drive stopping xbox one from starting.

XB1 will not boot up with external hard drive connected. ( western digital 2tb external ) Anyone having the same issue ? Is my external hard drive faulty or is it XB1 preview software ?

This is defiantly a unique issue, lol. I would try a hard reset on the Xbox, if that doesn't work I'll try to scratch my head with you

I am having the exact same problem. I have a 1tb hard drive and it worked fine. I left for a week and while I was gone the console was completely shut down. When I came back I turned on my xbox and it never told me that the external storage was ready. I
looked in my games and apps and found that it only showed the internal hard drive content. I found a temporary fix which is to unplug the hard drive and plug it back in. But the problem comes back every time you completely shut off the console. One thing's
for sure it is definitely frustrating and it leaves me with you guys, scratching my head.

I'm having the exact opposite issue, my Xbox keeps saying external storage ready every minute or so. If I try to play a game off of it it works fine until it re detects my drive which then closes the game. I am currently moving a game to the internal storage
so that I can play it and its taking forever because it keeps losing the re detecting my drive.

  7. I had the same problem a while ago myself. The solution (Which you might hate) is plugging your External HD into a computer and formatting it on there (Which will wipe it clean) and then plugging it back into your Xbox One and formatting via the console
and then it should work properly again.

I think Raikage Phoenix suggestion will get it working again. This is especially true if the issue was caused by a momentary glitch that caused drive corruption.

I would further suggest that since it would be on your PC to reformat it anyway, you might want to take some time to do some diagnostics on it. The drive's manufacturer should have diagnostic programs you can download. For example, Seagate's tool is called
SeaTools and Western Digital's is Data Lifeguard.

it is only a few months old so if the diagnostics tool does detect a hardware issue, you should get it replaced under warranty, Otherwise, the corruption will just happen again or it will just stop working altogether.

While your solution makes sense and seems very useful. I am hesitant to do it. For whatever reason my Xbox lets me download random Xbox 360 games. Once I have these games they don't show up on my account and I would have to buy them. It makes no sense but
I would hate to lose some of those games. So I guess it would be nice if someone could explain that to me as well.

A lot of external drive issues can be caused by the following settings on the Xbox.

If you’re currently in Instant-On mode, follow these steps to adjust the power management for storage:

1.Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

    2.Select Settings.

    3.Select All settings.

    4.Select Power.

    5.Go to Power mode.

6.Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage.”

    support.xbox.com/.../console-doesnt-detect-external-storage

I would advise a hard reset after changing that setting.

Unfortunately, EggsBoxJuan's solution did not work for me. I changed that setting and then did a hard reset and that did not work. I will be moving all the games that I may not be able to get back over to internal and then I will probably format my drive
    and run some diagnostics.

There are some great info here on how to solve the external hard drive issue. I have 2 western digital 4 TB hard drives on my xb1 and had a issue with one them not being readable. I have to say that the guy at western digital's support was fantastic! He
walked through all the steps to reformat the drive and get in back working with the xb1.

When in doubt try calling the drives costumer support.

Now the issue I have is after a xbox1 os preview update both drives become unreadable! If you have this issue that after it resets after install of the os update is to unplug the drive and do a hard reboot, After the restart plug the drive back into the
usb port and this should restore the external drive access. I wish MS would fix this in a future update!

What I did was unplug everything from the Xbox. I also unplugged the power brick and waited for it to turn off. I plugged everything back in and turned it on and it seems like it worked. May just be temporary though. But I am getting my console replaced
soon anyways because its internal drive has issues so we will see if the new console does this as well.
