External Hard Drive Will Not Format or Work (HD Works just fine on another Xbox)

The problem I have with my Xbox is that it will not format ANY
3.0 USB external drive I plug into it. It will recognize it, ask me to format it, and when I do that
nothing happens or it gets stuck in the green infinite loop. I know it is not the hard drive that is the problem because I am able to successfully format and use the hard drive on my brothers Xbox. When I formatted the hard
drive with my brother's Xbox and plug it into mine myxbox will recognize the drive and reads it, but it will not let me install games onto it, still gets stuck on 0%. The Xbox still plays games fine etc.

***NOTE my Xbox can still successfully install games onto its internal hard drive, it just won't format and copy/move/install anything onto an external drive***

I have searched everywhere online and on this forum and cannot find someone with the same problem as me. Let me start by saying I have done everything online people suggest for similar issues to no avail. I am very familiar with computers and Xbox's in general
and I have been very frustrated by this, as I have already had my Xbox One replaced once for a wi-fi card issue.

I have attempted the following to troubleshoot or fix the issue of my Xbox not formatting hard drives and not installing games onto an external drive:

    • Hard reset (holding power button down for 10 sec)
    • Removed all partitions and reformatted the hard drive w/ a PC and attempted to reformat with the Xbox
    • Deleted all volumes on the hard drive w/ a PC and attempted to let the Xbox create the partition
    • Format external hard drive with ANOTHER XBOX then use it on mine, still won't install games onto it
    • Put the Xbox in OFFLINE mode and attempt to install games onto the external drive (formatted by another Xbox)
Please do not suggest what I have already attempted, I attempted all of what I listed multiple times to be sure. I fear my only option will be to factory reset my console, but I have a lot of stuff on my hard drive I would hate having to reinstall etc. Especially
since my Xbox won't allow me to move files from my internal drive to an external drive.

Maybe one of you know what the problem is and have a suggestion on what I can do that hasn't been done. Is there a way to reinstall the OS without deleting everything on the hard drive? It seems like it is a software issue.

    :)

Xbox one External Hard Drive Question

I have a 1TB Toshiba HD that works great, did you format it? Look up online how to get xbox one external drive formatted and working, if it doesn't work then I think your drive may be broken, ask for a refund.

Tons of problems with my Xbox. I think its dying.

You can unplug the drive, then do a factory reset (deleting data). You don't need to format the drive just yet. I'm suggesting the following.

    1. Unplug the external drive

    2. factory reset deleting data

    3. Re-download your profile

    4. Install games to the Xbox without plugging the external drive back in.

    5. test (Do not plug in the external drive till you know it either works fine or doesn't work).

This will tell if there is something wrong with the data on the external drive or Xbox. I would imagine this is just a bad file or cache somewhere. After you've verified it does or does not work, you can plug the drive in. If it doesn't work with the drive
plugged in, then format the drive and reinstall your games to it.

Well that wouldnt really help me since all of my game saves are on the internal drive, which is why i was trying to format an external drive. I take it no one has had the same problem as me, i just want to avoid doing a factory reset especially if it doesnt
    fix the issue.

I reluctantly did a factory reset on the console External Hard Drive Will Not Format or Work (HD Works just fine on another Xbox) :( the console will now format external hard drives, but still will not install games onto the external hard drive. I think I am going to try an offline update to revert it to an older firmware, then update
the console to the latest OS because I am 99% sure it is a software issue, maybe a corrupt kernel or something that makes it hang up when installing games on an external drive.

I think you probably tried this but i dont see you mention it. When i found that my xbox one would not install games on myy external HD i found that i had to physicaly tell it to do so by going into settings/storage selecting the option to install on the
second HD. Before doing that it insisted on trying to install on the internal HD even when no space was available. This was not the case before the last update back then it automaticaly installed on the second drive when no space was available. But i ramble
    hope you sort it.

Yeah that was the first thing I did. Its not that it doesnt try to install on the external drive, it just gets stuck at 0% then says the installation stopped after a while. Yet when I plug the drive into another Xbox it can install games on the same drive
just fine... Trying this Update Diagnostic Tool to try and revert to an older OS, so far it doesnt look like that tool supports the version I have.

What I understand ( is in the instructions about external HDs ) is that once it is formatted to a console, it is only good for that console. I believe ( can't prove this, however Microsoft states it in the instructions for formatting to a given console )
it - the external HD is encoded to protect your installed media. I have 2 Xbox Ones and 2 Xbox Live accounts and 2 Samsung 2T USB Ext., HD. Done that way to keep things in order and clear. I understand ( per Microsoft ) that is I switch them between any other
console No One is responsible for the out come. It would all be on me. So i don't do it.

Yeah I only tried it on another console to make sure the hard drive worked with Xbox in general. I reformatted it on a compute before plugging it back into my xbox
