    External Hard Drive Turning Xbox One X off


    Hey People

    This has happened to me twice now both on the Xbox one S and X respectively; basically the External Hard Drive that I have (Samsung 1TB) will turn off my Xbox for no apparent reason.

    After coming off the Xbox tonight it then all of a sudden turned itself back on and came up with the boot up sequence on my screen. However, it would only get about 5 seconds into the video sequence of the boot up and then shut down and turn on again. However,
    when I unplugged the External Hard Drive it would boot up normally and go to the Xbox home like normal (bear in mind my power mode is set to instant on, not energy saving). As as soon as I plugged the hard drive back in though, the Xbox would then turn off.

    If someone knows why my External Hard Drive might be doing this then that would be awesome!

    turning off external hard drive

    In Sleep mode your external HDD is supposed to be on as the Xbox One continually tries to download patches and updates for the hard- and software. If you want it turned off, you need to set it power management to Power Savings and then switch the One off
    or press the Xbox button for 5 seconds on the console. that will power down the One completely as well. I have heard people having problems disconnecting while in sleep mode, being unable to resync their HDD later on, so it might not be a good thing to do

    Is the hard drive powered exclusively through the USB port, or does it require its own external power supply? Plug in the power supply if it takes one.

    Also try different USB ports on your console, and different USB cords (if available) to see if the same symptoms appear.

    help out with this issue you're experiencing.

    To clarify, this is only occurring with your external HD connected to your Xbox One S and X consoles?

    External hard drive malfunction

    Is your console an Xbox 360 or Xbox One ?

    Double check if the external hard drive is actually being detected, sometimes the USB connection might be loose. If the external hard drive is not detected, turn off the console

    and then double check the USB connector is firmly plugged in, then turn console back on and see if external hard drive appears.

    Also another thing to check... some brands of external hard drive have a power light when turned on. Check if the power light is on.

    I have the SAME PROBLEM..I have the XBOX ONE X and a Western Digital 8TB USB/Adapter external hard drive..I always keep my xbox one x on instant on mode but everything is unchecked, like searching for updates, etc..so that it will NOT turn on I do it manually,
    its checked off to turn off the xbox one when turned off, never had an issue til the recent update, when off the hard drive every few minutes will make a tick sound and a hum sound then turn off..every few min, thought it was the hard drive, reformatted it
    yesterday, did the same darn thing, so I put the xbox one x into energy saving mode and guess what, PROBLEM SOLVED..but I cant stand energy save mode, so its something to do with this update and the hard drive with instant on mode, not sure what it is but
    its VERY annoying wish someone could figure it out
