External Hard drive slowing xbox down exponentially

My xbox seems to run just fine without the hard drive but the moment its plugged in everything is slowed down, for a whie I just left it out but now a game has an update my internal storage cant hold and I need my External Hd but when its plugged in it
a lot of problems come up. Games that run fine without the hard drive plugged in Games take too long to load and sometimes evern options in the settings like network troubleshoot and xbox assist. My only concern is that everytime its plugged in a 0gb copy
of Destiny 2 appears and takes forever to get that out and it comes back everytime I plug the Hd, i also am trying to install Rainbow 6 Seige and its 12.8% downloaded, its stopped there but when i unplug it the download goes away and comes back when I plug
it back in. Besides those concerns the Hd slows my xbox down a ton and i don’t understand the root cause of this issue.

Thanks for coming to the forums with your issue. best option in this case would be to reformat the external hard drive on a PC. This will wipe all of the games off, you can reinstall them to the hard drive though.

Any external storage that you’re using is too slow to play a series X or S game. The game must be on the internal storage that is exponentially faster in order to work. You can play games from previous generations from the hard drive, and use the hard drive for long-term storage

External hard drives are not fast enough for Xbox Series X|S titles. Unfortunately you can't play these games off slow USB external hard drives. They need either be installed internally or to an optional Xbox Series X|S Expansion card.

I would like to query if it hasn't already been asked. How much of your internal hard drive is used?

I have had many people with similar problems and was focused around their internal hard drive being too full. as the internal hard drive is used to store the operating system it slows down the processing power of the console itself. I've always had external
storage with my games on to stop my internal being full and have never experienced slowing down of my console.

Xbox Series X|S games can only be installed on the console's internal storage or the external Seagate SSD card. Link here. External drives are too slow for those games. The external hard drive can only be used to install backward compatible games (Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One).
