External Hard Drive Shuts Down Console

So recently my Seagate 1tb external hard drive has been disconnecting and reconnecting is short bursts. I figured that something might be wrong with the wire, because I've had it for roughly 3 years. Today when I powered on the console, it shut down and
restarted several times, until it just shut off for good. I unplugged and replugged everything to no avail. I then removed the hard drive out of curiosity and the console ran fine. I let it run for a bit and even played a game downloaded on the internal
hard drive to see if it was stable. I came to the conclusion that the console was fine. I then plugged the the hard drive back in and it immediately shut off and started repeatedly turning off and on. Can anybody help me? (P.S. I replaced the wire and
    nothing changed)

    :)

    Where did my games go?!

If you have an external hard drive it could be an issue with that. Try holding the power button on the console for 10 seconds until it shuts down. Then unplug the USB drive and plug it into a different slot. Power the console back on and see if the drive
    reads.

Games will not start in preview program

Have you tried unplugging the external hard drive and then go to setting and ask the console to carry out a full restart once the console restarts plug the external hard drive back in to see if it then load your games on there.

If the problem persists after a restart I would suggest using the "Report and error" function listed in the console shut down menu and posting the issue in the preview forums.

External hard drive not shutting down

Sorry that's what I probably meant for it to enter enter a sleep mode. That being said any idea why it changed? It was perfectly fine a week ago but today I had to unplug everything form my xbox not sure if that caused anything I plugged it into my laptop to check the toolkit for it and the setting for it to sleep with display was turnd on so really not sure whats going on.

External hard drive not shutting down

Well because it's not supposed to

You don't want a hdd to shut down you want it to wind down to sleep

A sudden shut off would send the head crashing against the platters which is a big no no also why consoles warn you about sudden shutdown and data loss

You can cause physical damage to the platters

External hdds are self.powered they dont rely on host devices this is a safety feature not to mention you are only talking about 5watt per hour

You need to run it for months before you see a cent on your hydro bill

Your microwave or freezer or tv runs more power idle in an hour then a full console in a month on idle

Fyi there is a reason for it

When you click min om your microwave or "on" on your tv they both turn on instantly

Because they maintain power to receive the signal

    If you want completely off

First power down your console and wait for the external hdd to spin down completely

    Then unplug the cord

External hdds don't idle down like computers do until the host ia off and because they are self powered they don't turn off just idle

If you really really want a drive that turns off on demand

You need to limit yourself to less rhen 500gigs as most drives require dc power

Anything under 500 usually uses USB 3 -5 war power
