External Hard drive recommendations that turns off completely while in instant on

Hi,

I am looking for an external hard drive that will turn off and support the instant on without periodically turning on and off when the xbox is powered off in instant on mode.

I purchased a western digital WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN 4tb my book 3.0 usb with 7200rpm hd. only problem is that unless the xbox is in power saver mode the drive continues to spin.

any help is greatly appreciated!

are you on instant on?

also i noticed this (and haven't seen anyone mention it) but even if you turn the system completely off it'll still power up your external hard drive. Also if the xbox is hot, the fan will run even in sleep mode.

 

How to make external hard drive the main download drive?

okay instant on mode is already off because that's your way to get it to work with external hard drive it's an energy mode right now. And I have to keep the x box on in order for it to download to that hard drive. So you're saying leave the instant on mode
off and keep it on energy mode, and try to download to the internal hard drive? if it works with the external hard drive then it should work with the internal hard drive doing it that way shouldn't it? Because it does work with the external hard drive with
it on energy mode

 

to be clear the settings are

Power Mode Instant On

Automatically download updates and purchases turned on

when Xbox is off, turn off storage is on

on start go to tv and wake up xbox by saying xbox on are both off.

This hard drive you're using runs on external power, correct? Being plugged into the wall, I think it's pretty typical that the drive is always spinning - at least that's been my experience using these types of hard drives.

For them to turn off, you will likely see better results with the "portable" external storage drives, the 2.5" drives that typically spin at 5400rpm and are USB-powered (i.e. their only connection is the USB connection, no wall outlet). There are plenty
of these models available, but, if you're interested, I personally use a Seagate and that turns off when the setting says it should.

As Maxen13 explained, desktop external drive such as the WD My Book run on external power and this is why they continue running while the console is on or in stand-by mode. I would consider a portable USB-powered drive if you want it to spin down more often.
